Overcoming anti-Semitic prejudices: social-anthropological and religious

Joseph Weiler, professor at New York University and high school of Europe (Bruges, Belgium), spoke at the framework of the workshop , with the discussion paper 'Is the Judeo-Christian tradition important for Europe'. Of Sephardic origin, Professor Weiler is considered one of the leading experts on the law of the European Union.

Weiler referred to the main anti-Semitic prejudices present in society: the social-anthropological and the religious. Regarding the first category, he refuted the identification of people who profess the Jewish faith with wealth, greed, dishonesty....

As for the second, he clarified some questions about Jewish ritual laws, such as food restrictions or the observance of the Sabbath. He emphasized their importance for Jews to be able to keep God present in their daily lives and to preserve man's freedom from his material reality.

In the afternoon, he also gave a seminar for teachers on what should be included in the lecture of the Future of Europe and, conversely, which issues should not be present.
