The students of the Master's Degree in Architectural Theory and design (MtDA) of the University of Navarra have started their programs of study of postgraduate program with a two-week workshop at School of Architecture of the University of Miami.

MtDA's director , Luis Suárez Mansilla, received the new students in Miami and had the opportunity to convey to them the importance of this experience both academically and institutionally. In this sense, Suárez points out that giving the workshop at the University of Miami "reinforces the international vocation of Master's Degree, while opening interesting avenues of partnership professor between both institutions".

Under the direction of Professor Edward M. Baum, the students worked on the design and the functional rearrangement of a space destined for the exchange of various public transportation at area in Downtown Miami.

Professor Víctor Larripa, who supervised the students' projects, explains that the fact that students from both School of Architecture Víctor Larripa, who supervised the students' projects, explains that the fact that students from both institutions worked on the same field "was intended to generate synergies between them, and to exchange ideas and proposals in several sessions at work ".

This is the first time that the Master's Degree in Architectural Theory and design will give a project workshop in Miami. Eduardo Domingo, director of development of the School of Architecture, explains that "an effort is being made to continue strengthening ties in this continent", as well as "to continue supporting initiatives that showcase the talent that each year passes through the classrooms of the program, as is the exhibition Curriculum".

The project

The students have focused on the redesign and rearrangement of a space destined to exchange of public transport in the Downtown area. A complex area where buses and an elevated subway, called 'omnibus', converge.

Professor Larripa explains that "the urban design and the architecture of the place is inadequate and makes it an exclusively transit area. It is therefore necessary to rethink the urban space in order to generate not only a point of transport connections but also a place to stay". For this reason, he adds, "it is necessary to protect this urban space from the very hot climate of the city, as well as to add public or private programs in one or more buildings that improve the urban quality of the environment". It has also been suggested to connect this area physically with the bay, very close to the site.

The students have to work at the same time on various programs and combine them with the redesign of the site's connections to its surroundings and rethink the way citizens interact with public transport. All of this requires working at different levels and heights, since different scales converge in the area of action: the adjacent skyscrapers, the nearby bay, the elevated 'omnibus' Structures , bus shelters, etc.

For the development of project , two weeks of continuous work will be dedicated to the workshops of the School of Architecture of the University of Miami. In addition, the students of local professor Edgar Sarli are working on the same environment, in order to generate synergies between the students of both universities, and to exchange ideas and proposals in several sessions of common work .
