A boxer born in Navarre and buried in Australia

Although some Basque media, such as Euskonews, state Bilbao as his birthplace, Agustín Argote Marquínez was born in the Navarrese town of Olazagutía on 11 March 1926.

degree program Agustín began his boxing career in Bilbao, and at the age of 20, in 1946, he moved to Bordeaux, where he continued to frequent the gyms and learnt everything about the ring.

He entered the ring as a featherweight and won ten of the twelve fights he contested. He returned to Bilbao in 1947 and competed in the Spanish amateur championships (XIX), which were held in Madrid.

He was proclaimed winner of Bizkaia and Spanish "amateur" champion, along with his four Biscayan teammates in their respective weights. He took part on three occasions with the national team and in 1948 he was a boxer in the Spanish pugilistic team at the London Olympic Games, although he was eliminated. The following year he decided to dedicate himself professionally to boxing, taking Francisco López as his manager, and won the degree scroll Spanish welterweight champion title from Juanito Martín.

In 1951, after numerous victories abroad, he was crowned Spanish lightweight champion. In 1952 he won countless fights, losing only to the world star fighter, the Italian Duilio Loi, in Australia. He lived in this country, where he lived all the splendour of his pugilistic degree program . On 21 June 1955, after his 12-round points defeat by Benny Beazley in Wellington, he decided to hang up his gloves. He died on 5 August 1996 in Melbourne, Australia.
