Andrea Barnó achieved the honour of winning the first Olympic medal for sport in Navarre. A member of the Handball team, she won the bronze medal. Although Elena Navaz had also won a bronze medal in Seoul-88, this is the first medal in the Official Programme of the Games, as Taekwondo in Seoul was an exhibition sport.

Andrea was born on 4 January 1980 in Estella. Her sporting career has always been linked to her hometown team, Sociedad Deportiva Itxako, a team with which she played in the Spanish Division of Honour Handball, making her debut in the 2003-2004 season. In 2011 he was runner-up in the Champions League. He was an international with the Spanish national team with which he made his debut in 2008.

She has played in the World Championship in China in 2009, in Brazil in 2011 where she won the first bronze medal for the national team, in the European Championships in Macedonia in 2008, winning the silver medal for the first time, and in the European Championship in Denmark and Norway in 2010, as well as in the Mediterranean Games in Pescara (Italy) in 2009. Due to the Spanish crisis, Andrea, after the London Olympics, could not find a team and decided to retire from active handball.

Eduardo Gurbindo, also a handball player, won the Olympic Diploma when the Spanish national team was classified in 7th place.

While two sportsmen from Navarre took part in basketball, there were three Navarrese footballers who were part of the Spanish Olympic team: Javi Martínez, Iker Muniáin and César Azpilicueta.

The list of Navarrese Olympians was completed by two track cyclists, Hodei Mazkiaran and Juan Peralta, and the sailor, already Olympic champion in Athens, Xabi Fernández, who on this occasion missed out on award.
