The first two Navarrese Olympians
Amaya Garbayo in swimming holds the distinction of being the first athlete from Navarre to take part in an official Olympic Games competition, degree scroll .
Amaya was born in Pamplona on 26 March 1970 and was part of the 4x100 freestyle relay team, finishing in 13th place, beating the Spanish record. She was Spanish champion in 1988 in the 100m and 50m freestyle.
In 1991 he also took part in the Mediterranean Games held in Athens in the 100m freestyle test where he came 7th.
Elena Navaz also participated in these Games and won a meritorious bronze medal, but in Seoul taekwondo was not part of the official programme but of the exhibition programme.
Elena was born in Pamplona on 21 September 1960. She won a bronze medal at the World Tekwondo Championships in Barcelona 1987 and three silver medals at the Europeans in Sttugart in 1984, Ankara in 1988 and Karlsluge in 1989.
In 1987 she was proclaimed Spanish champion in her weight class. Professionally, she was a primary school teacher and municipal policewoman, being the first woman to be head of the Villava Municipal Police.
Dionisio Muñoz would repeat his participation in weightlifting, and Juan Carlos Barcos - in the photo - would once again be part of the official Judo team as a leader.
