presentation - doctorate in Natural and Applied Sciences

The doctoral program in Chemistry (PROGRAMME IN EXTINCTION) is part of the School of doctorate that the University of Navarra has implemented, in the framework established by the RD 99/2011, as a planning, coordination and monitoring body of the doctorate Programmes, and the manager of its development and organisation is the School of Sciences.

It is a programme adapted to the European Higher Education Area Education that meets the requirements set out in Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, which establishes the organisation of official university education. It was evaluated by the National Agency of Quality assessment (National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditation), verified by the committee of Universities. It has official status and is registered at Registry of Universities Centers and Qualifications (BOE of 16 March 2011).

The programme has been adapted to the verification procedures foreseen by RD 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies (BOE of 10 February 2011), having obtained a favourable report favourable National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditation and positively verified by the committee of Universities.

The doctoral program has been distinguished with the accredited specialization of Excellence (MEE 2011-00238) by the Ministry of Education for the academic years 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 (evaluation weighted global National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditation: 92 out of 100 according to resolution of October 6, 2011, of the General Universities administrative office (BOE of October 20, 2011).

The academic background of the present doctoral program at Chemistry :

- The above programme complies with the requirements set out in Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, which establishes the organisation of official university education. It was positively evaluated by the National Agency for the Quality of Universities assessment (National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditation), positively verified by the committee of Universities, and C with official character by the Ministry of Education (BOE 16 March 2011).

- This doctoral program has been distinguished with accredited specialization towards Excellence by the Ministry of Education for the academic years 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 (Resolution of 6 October 2011 of the Ministry of Education BOE 20 October 2011).

- Previously, the doctoral program en Métodos Fisicoquímicos de Análisis governed by RD 778/1998 which was C as an Official Programme of postgraduate program by the Ministry of Education and Science according to Royal Decree 56/2005.

The training experience of the doctoral program started in academic year 1991/1992, directed by Full Professor Dr. Miguel Sánchez González until the 2006/2007 academic year. Subsequently and up to the present time the doctoral program is the responsibility of Dr. Iñigo Navarro Blasco.

The development of the programme is mainly under the responsibility of department of Chemistry and Soil Science, which participates with its various groups of research. This ensures that teaching is taught in the different areas of Chemistry (Materials Science, Chemistry Physics, Chemistry Analytical , Chemistry Inorganic, Chemistry Environment, Chemistry Soil and Engineering Chemistry). Therefore, the lines of research are framed in the different areas, as well as the work of research developed. Since the implementation of the doctoral program programme, more than 40 thesis doctoral theses have been defended, 6 of which have been awarded the award Extraordinary doctorate. The topics of research addressed have been multiple, which demonstrates the training capacity of the Department, accredited by the established indicators of the research work of the performance of doctoral program in the last process of assessment of the programs of study of doctorates issued by National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditation (period 2004-2009). The internship totality of the lecturers on the staff of the Dept. of Chemistry and Soil Science have directed a doctoral thesis , establishing a ratio of 1.7 thesis directed per lecturer. In addition, all the students of doctorate received external funding to carry out their programs of study. Likewise, the scientific output of the research, reflected in terms of scientific contributions in journals with a high impact index, exceeds the reference letter standard of 3 articles in publications rated in the first tercile, reaching a ratio of 3.7 articles (T1) and a total of 5.4 indexed articles (JCR) per doctoral thesis defended in the programme.

Another noteworthy aspect of the programme is the promotion of internationalization by the staff professor of the Department. partnership relations are maintained with professors and doctors from other institutions, both national and foreign, which means that students on the programme can carry out part of their research work in these centres. This contributes greatly to improving and enriching the training of future PhDs.

The training work of the lecturers integrated in the programme is extended to the teaching taught and the work of directing the Work of research of the Master's Degree in Chemistry Applied to research and Industry. The career guidance of doctoral program seeks the training of professionals with the qualities of critical scientific spirit, skill internship in the laboratory, capacity for speech, business management and team work , which will enable them to develop student in the chemical field in an autonomous manner. At present, the chemical sector is probably one of the most heterogeneous industries. On the one hand, it is made up of the subsector of the Chemistry Basic, whose main areas are the production of raw materials, plastics and synthetic rubbers, organic and inorganic Chemistry , industrial gases, polymers and synthetic fibres and fertilisers, which has represented approximately 40% of production in recent years. On the other hand, Chemistry for industry and consumption is included, which reaches levels of around 34% and whose main areas are detergents and cleaning products, dyes and paints, perfumery and cosmetics. And finally, the last sub-sector is made up of the so-called Chemistry de la Salud, which includes both raw materials and pharmaceutical specialities, as well as animal health and phytosanitary products, which account for 26% of the sector's total production. It is foreseeable that in the near future the weight of each subsector will vary, but all of them will have an important market share.

The professor of the doctoral program is familiar with this professional reality, as it has a fluid relationship with the professor team of the module I of the Master's Degree at Chemistry, made up of qualified professionals from industry. This structure seeks a dynamic balance, as well as complementarity, between the specific problems and ways of work in industry and the advanced and instrumental knowledge that a chemist requires in an industrial field of application. The PhD student adapts more easily to the relevant work in industry Chemistry, once the language and methods of management are familiar to the business environment. This significantly shortens the period of introduction and adaptation of the chemist to the way of working in industry.

Likewise, it allows the student with a greater research interest to learn about the most relevant technical and methodological aspects for its future application to the interests of the different sectors of industry. In this way, a link is sought between the lines of research at the University and the corresponding lines at Departments of research and development+i of the industry Chemistry. This undoubtedly contributes to interesting synergies as well as to a transfer of the results of the research.

In this respect, contracts and projects have been signed at research with different institutions, companies and industries, which have ultimately led to the students getting closer to the business world and their future professional performance.

The new proposed doctoral program is based on the previous professor and research experience of the previous doctoral program and associates the existing link with the industrial network established through the Master's Degree in Chemistry Applied to research and Industry, giving it a double added value of great interest for society in line with the real demand for research and development+i of the professional sector.

In this sense, the tasks of research are also guaranteed, since the different teams of research attached to doctoral program develop various projects of research that have funding from FUNA (University of Navarra Foundation), thus recognising the priority interest of research by the Commission of research and development of the University of Navarra, framed within the Plan of research of the University of Navarra (PIUNA).
