BACTERIAL DISEASES
These are caused by bacteria, microscopic single-celled organisms made up of prokaryotic cells. They are the most common infectious diseases ranging from minor skin infections to bubonic plague and tuberculosis. Bacteria cause disease by secreting or excreting toxins, by producing toxins internally, or by inducing sensitivity to their antigenic properties.
PARASITIC DISEASES
These are diseases caused by protozoa, worms or arthropods. They can be acquired through food, contaminated water, insect bites or by contact sexually. These diseases cause great damage in tropical and subtropical regions. Factors associated with these parasitic infections include: faecal contamination of soil or water, environmental conditions conducive to the reproduction of certain parasites, poor hygiene, dietary habits, migration or immunosuppression, among others.
VIRAL DISEASES
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the causative agent of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a human disease characterised by low levels of CD4 lymphocytes associated with development opportunistic infections and some cancers.
PATHOGEN IMMUNOLOGY
One of the mechanisms used by pathogens to persist in humans is to modulate the host's immune response. Therefore, understanding these mechanisms is essential both to understand the transmission and progression of the disease they cause, and to study new therapeutic targets in the fight against these pathogens. In this section, we characterise the immune response in animal models that chronically harbour the pathogen, as well as after the administration of possible candidate treatments.
