Animal welfare in Spain: realities and challenges
The session of the Chair Campus Home of Sustainability is the closing of the project "Social perception of animal welfare and animal rights in Spain: diagnosis and characterization", funded by the PIUNA call. The event is open to the public and culminates a research started in 2020 that has analyzed how Spanish society perceives animal welfare and our relationship with animals from legal, educational, sociological and media perspectives.
Researchers from universities (University of Navarra, Pablo de Olavide University, University of Salamanca) and non-universityEducation Navarra, Ajuntament del Prat) have participated, forming a multidisciplinary team. The workshop will expose the work done to date, and will feature guests who will provide complementary perspectives from culture, environmental management , and Philosophy.

Dr. Josep-Maria Mallarach Dr. Josep-Maria Mallarach holds a PhD in Environmental Biology with extensive experience as an environmental consultant . His areas of specialization range from protected area planning, landscape management and assessment to ecological connectivity. He will give the opening plenary session. |

Dr. José Ignacio Murillo Professor of Philosophy at the University of Navarra. He directs the group Mente-cerebro at the ICS of the UNAV, where he investigates on the human being some questions in which Philosophy must collaborate with other sciences such as biology or psychology. He will give the closing lecture . |

Rafael Miranda researcher at the BIOMA Institute in the research group Biodiversity Data Analytics and Environmental Quality of the University of Navarra and Full Professor in the department of Environmental Biology. His research activity is in the field of Hydrobiology and Animal Ecology, especially in the management and Conservation of Biodiversity in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. He has worked in Bangladesh, Great Britain, California, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Ecuador in partnership with local researchers, and his current research projects goal to analyze the implications of biodiversity knowledge for management and conservation. In the welcome session he will present the results of a recently completed project analyzing the social perception of the role of zoos in Spain. |

Adrián González graduate in Philosophy and Criminology, is currently working on his doctoral thesis at the University of Salamanca on ecofeminism and animal mistreatment. His areas of research include the logic of dominance, as well as animal and environmental ethics. Adrián will present the work developed in this project around the recently approved Animal Welfare Law. |

Ana Sánchez Biologist and environmentalist, passionate about the environment, the fight against climate change and the bicycle as a tool for social transformation. She is currently working at the University of Navarra as a research teaching assistant in projects on social perception of the environment. Together with Luis Erneta, she will present the content analysis on animal welfare in educational laws. |

Luis Erneta Professor teaching assistant Doctor, Associate Professor and Private University Professor accredited by the National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditation. His research career includes Environmental Biology, Geography and Land Management. He has knowledge in the treatment and edition of territorial data as well as in cartographic analysis and development , handling Geographic Information Systems with ArcGis, ESRI. His professor experience covers pre-university and university teaching, Degree and postgraduate, as well as professionals in continuous training courses and preparation for different specialties of Public employment Offers. |

Nora Escribano PhD in Biology from the University of Navarra. Currently professor at the same university, she combines teaching internships with research. Her latest work addresses the role of zoos and aquariums as centers of scientific research and conservation. Together with Álvaro Martinicorena, she will present the results of the analysis of the message on animal welfare in the written press. |

Silvia Collado Professor in the department of Psychology and Sociology at the University of Zaragoza, her career focuses on Environmental Psychology. D. from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, she has made stays at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Cornell University (USA) and Leiden University (The Netherlands). She is associate editor of the Journal of Environmental Psychology and Frontiers in Psychology, and member of the board of directors of the International Association of People-Environment Studies. She has received several awards for her merits in research and knowledge transfer. Together with José Manuel Echavarren, she will present the methodology followed in the project to carry out the study of the perception of the Spanish society on animal welfare. |

José Manuel Echevarren Senior Associate Professor in the department of Sociology at the Pablo de Olavide University (Seville). D. in Sociology (Public University of Navarra, 2004), his doctoral thesis received the XXII award of doctoral thesis of the National high school of Political Scientists and Sociologists (2007). She has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She worked as a researcher teaching assistant at the Centro de programs of study Andaluces and is a Visiting Associate at the University of York. She is board member of the board of the Environmental Sociology research committee of the European Sociological Association and of the research committee of the Spanish Federation of Sociology. Together with Silvia Collado, she will present the methodology followed in the project to carry out the study of the perception of the Spanish society on animal welfare. |

Dolores López Professor of Human Geography at the University of Navarra. Degree in Geography and History from the University of Navarra, Master in Demography from the London School of Economics and PhD in Geography from the University of Navarra with a thesis on mortality and population aging in Navarra. She has spent time at the LSE, the Office of Population Research at Princeton University and the Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She will present the analysis of the results of the survey on perception of animal welfare recently carried out in the Spanish population. |

Jordi Puig researcher at the BIOMA Institute in the EnvironmentalHumanities group of the University of Navarra and Senior Associate Professor in the Environmental Biology department . Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley (USA) and at the University of Manchester (UK). He was director the Master's Degree in Biodiversity, Landscapes and Sustainable management at UNAV and chaired the commission in charge of starting up the Degree in Environmental Sciences at the same university. He is accredited as Senior Associate Professor in Arts and Humanities. He will moderate the roundtable on the present and future of the relationship between humans and animals. |

Ana Villarroya Researcher at the BIOMA Institute in the EnvironmentalHumanities group and contract professor in the Environmental Biology department of the University of Navarra. She holds a PhD in Biology from the same University and has made stays in Lund (Sweden) and Boulder (Colorado, USA). Her work is framed in the human-nature relationship, addressing how people understand and perceive nature, and also the effects of our contact with it. He will briefly introduce the workshop at the beginning. |
