Román Merino: "Future HR professionals must be prepared to take on today's great challenges".

Last Thursday, February 16, Román Merino Frías, partner director of Reinforce Advisors shared with the students of Master's Degree at Personnel Management Service and told them about his experience managing people.

The executive studied law at the Universidad Pontifica Comillas ICAI-ICADEU and completed several IESE, MBA and PADE programs. Throughout his professional degree program , with more than 30 years of experience, he has been in different management positions such as: group Eulen, network Eléctrica, Ono and the group Zeta.

During the discussion paper, he spoke about his current experience in HR area , focusing on two of the approaches he has been most involved in: first, restructuring area and employability.

On restructuring issues, he emphasized that it is core topic to have an adequate and professional relationship with the unions. The basis for negotiation is dialogue and balance between the parties. As an example, he described the case of the ERE of Coca-Cola in 2014, he explained that one of the main problems was the design and communication, this last factor is crucial in any restructuring subject .

The second topic revolved around how employability has been his goal throughout his professional degree program , because of the impact that human resources have on it, and especially as a manager the knowledge of the business. He also placed great emphasis on the topic of the brand and its visibility.

He closed his session by listing the main challenges facing area HR today:

  1. Working and living with a very restrictive legal framework .
  2. The war for talent in a globalized world
  3. The restructuring of services to Eastern countries in terms of cost and labor.
  4. The importance of promote flexible work environments.

Merino stated that these challenges are not easy to take on when you reach position HR management, but for future professionals they should be prepared and focused on enhancing the well-being of employee. Therefore, HR professionals should focus on projects that add value with a change mentality and bet on internal promotion.
