The case of the private media confiscated in Ecuador at the beginning of Rafael Correa's presidency (2007 - 2017) led to complex economic, legal, and professional circumstances for the media companies and their journalists. This paper aims to share a broad and documented perspective on the origin and development of the issue at hand by combining three methods for its approach: the historical method, analysis of media policies and in-depth interviews. Implementing regulatory procedures to devise structures for adjustment and censorship towards private media promoted a media reshaping that resulted on the stockpiling of important nationwide media companies (TV, radio, and magazines) into the state-owned entities umbrella. These confiscations took place at a sensitive time for the banking system that owned several of these media, which had been affected by a severe economic, social, and political crisis. The legal actions filed by owners of the confiscated media have rendered it impossible to sell the companies. Furthermore, the precarious financial status turned them into undesirable targets for possible buyers. Out of the seventeen privates media companies owned by the government in 2008, only two are still active in 2023. The other fifteen companies went bankrupt or are currently undergoing liquidation. This measure, while advantageous for the political power, represented an economic and journalistic failure.

When the first university schools of journalism and communication started in Spain in 1971, only a few European and North American countries had preferentially adopted an academic model. Variety was their dominant feature, exhibiting diverse professional cultures and sometimes political contexts. In countries with a long journalistic tradition such as the UK, learning on the job was the practice at that time. Labor unions were also prevalently responsible for the training of aspiring journalists in France and Germany. In contrast, in the USA, university journalism schools had been established some decades before. In addition, teaching and research in communication evolved via different paths in those countries that had a more noteworthy influence on Spain. The beginning of university-based schools of communication theoretically contributed to the establishment of a more suitable institutional platform for the delivery of communication research trends in the West. An analysis of historical, political, and institutional contexts converging in Spain in the 1970s is useful to describe how the first university schools were shaped in terms of both their incipient teaching and research challenges. A review of the literature covering both fields in Spain and other countries, along with some previously published archival sources, helps us to frame the case of Spain from a transnational viewpoint that considers the impact of contemporary foreign influences. The resulting broader comparative perspective provides a better overarching understanding of the case, even to the point of measuring the extent to which it can be considered a pioneer in this context.

In the context of the Cold War that affected the first steps of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), journalism education was the topic dealt by attendees from West and East Europe during the 1968 conference in Pamplona, Spain. Paradoxically professors from communist countries spoke openly in an event partly sponsored by Spain's anti-communist regime. Indirectly, the lack of press freedom in the late dictatorship caused some incidents due to some Spanish professors' critical speeches. Beyond these controversies related to domestic issues, depoliticisation-in accordance with the original spirit of IAMCR-became a key strategy for the conference success as a whole. The election of Pamplona, located in a non-aligned country, as the conference's venue meant a break in the struggle to gain power and influence within the organisation. This story, based on unpublished documents from the University of Navarra's School of Communication, sheds light on several intertwined issues such as international academic cooperation beyond the post World War II East-West confrontation, and press liberalisation in authoritarian regimes through journalism education. It is also a contribution for a more accurate knowledge of the life of IAMCR as a worldwide organisation in the field of communication research.

The mass media, especially print media, suffered the financial crisis and recession between 2008 and 2014, which also brought about significant changes in politics and society. Economic and technological factors contributed to this state of things: the dramatic decrease of advertising investment, massive layoffs in newsrooms, and changes in news consumption habits due to internet and social media. The traditional business model of print media collapsed. Furthermore, citizens' trust in mainstream media declined because they were considered as a member of the establishment and therefore part of the problem, not of the solution. Their financial weakness led them to a greater dependence on economic and political powers and consequently to lose independence in their news and editorial policies. Their mediation role in shaping public opinion is now shared with new actors.

Traditional political sectors within Franco's regime had newspapers somehow aligned with their approaches. This point appears to be more problematic when referred to the so-called technocrats, who played a notable role in politics between 1957 and 1973. A number of historians contend that some national-circulation newspapers (Madrid, El Alcazar and Nuevo Diario) and the news agency Europa Press were not only technocrat representatives but also Opus Dei's press due to the fact that members of this institution took on prominent positions. This article analyzes the relevance and accuracy of this identification, which was influenced by the politicization that Falangists and the minister of Information, Manuel Fraga, acting in their own interests, promoted from their power spheres. Various historians have uncritically adopted this interpretation.
