UPDATE COURSE IN THEOLOGY
Canonical and apocryphal: the meaning of a distinction
The finding (or rediscovery), in the 19th and 20th centuries, of certain "apocryphal" books in Ethiopia, in Egypt (Genizah of Cairo, Oxyrhynchus, Nag Hammadi) and in Palestine (Qumran and other localities near the Dead Sea) has given new impetus to reflection on the validity of the biblical canon. Why are some books considered canonical and others apocryphal? Why, for example, were the Gospel of Thomas or the Gospel of Peter not accepted? Who defines the canon? Is it the fruit of an imposition or the result of an ecclesial process of discernment result ?
Postmodern culture and sensibility question the legitimacy of the distinction between canonical and apocryphal. Plurality and diversity, considered more authentic and reliable, are generally preferred to uniformity. Some scholars defend the need to recover the report of the different original Christianities and their Scriptures.
From these problems, the course offers arguments that show the historical and theological foundations of the biblical canon as it has been handed down in the Church. The proposed topic is part of the General Introduction to Sacred Scripture programme and is also linked to other disciplines such as Church History, Fundamental Theology and Patrology.
The lectures, focused on the topic of the course, will be complemented by sessions on the teaching of the main biblical subjects (Old and New Testament) in seminaries and Schools ecclesiasticals.
Main objectives:
-
update biblical-theological.

Reflection on the programmes, the bibliography and the methodology of the teaching of biblical subjects.
