Women's leadership skills: Nahikari Sánchez

Blanca Ezponda Sanz, 2nd year student of Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), brings us a chronicle of the fourth session of the cycle "Leadership skills for women". On this occasion, the guest speaker was Nahikari Sánchez, director of group of research CRIMINA Risk, who highlighted the illusion, effort and continuous training for any professional path.

Last Friday was the fourth session of the "Leadership skills for women" cycle and, this time, the guest who accompanied us was Nahikari Sánchez. Ever since she was a child, she has had a concern: to know how to prevent evil in the world and to understand what goes on in the minds of those who commit such atrocities. After studying chemistry, she began studying criminology in San Sebastian. Later he did a Master's Degree in Security and another in Forensic Sciences, as Criminology did not become an official degree scroll until 2005. His interest and commitment to this science opened up the first paths for him in free consultancy service projects for several town councils, which later became new projects with budget. Having commented on his professional career, let us highlight some of the points of the session that I think may be of interest.

Nahikari insisted a lot on the importance of getting excited in all your projects and enjoying it. "We have to put aside the impostor syndrome," she said. The impostor syndrome is one who is unable to recognise his or her own worth and achievements. The most important thing is that the person is not able to do what he or she wants to do. To this end, it is essential to perseveranceWe should not wait until we are older, but we can start planting little seeds that will gradually bear fruit. We should not wait until we are older, but from a young age we can read books on subjects that we find interesting, or participate in congresses and get to know their leaders.

The excitement of the beginnings and the tools we develop along the way will allow us to be better at what we do. Sánchez defines a good criminologist as one who has a vocation for her work, which is reflected in her daily excitement. In addition, she must be restless and read in order to train in her profession. Analytical skills and a mind free of prejudices are essential, as she deals with the "darkest parts of the world". Humility also plays a very important role in order to know what one does not know, thus establishing a network with other professionals.

The last idea, common to other sessions of the cycle and which I think is a point core topic in every profession, is the role of the family when it comes to having the peace of mind to carry out your profession. It is very difficult to be a good professional without the support of the family, without having someone to delegate tasks to when you have to be absent. For this, it is essential for the family to walk in the same direction, towards the same objectives. This sometimes leads us to ask ourselves the question: family or profession? She herself told us how she gave up a scholarship in Australia to prioritise family issues.

Listening to Nahikari's professional career and the advice she gave us from her own experience has made me reflect. Even though we are still students, we should not stand still, we have to move, take an interest and delve deeper into the issues that concern us in a special way. Only with this attitude will we be able to achieve what we set out to do. And with this I do not want to fall into the "if you can dream it, you can do it", so present nowadays, but I think it is essential to put all the tools and be clear about our goal, in order to be able to achieve it one day. We will also fail, but with a clear dream it is easier to persevere and keep walking towards goal. Because as a teacher told Nahikari: "If you aim for the moon you will at least reach the top of the tree".
