Granular convection

When a collection of grains enclosed within a container is agitated, the collective motions described by the particles as a whole are coherent and allow advective currents to be identified. This process is referred to in the literature as "granular convection". The existence of these motions seems to be related to both the interaction between the particles themselves and the influence of the walls on their collective dynamics. In this line of research we study the role of symmetry breaking induced by both the shape of the container and the shape of the applied excitation.

We have collected a large number of dataof granular media under vibration, and this has allowed us to review in depth the causes of convective motion. The following document contains a systematic summaryof this work(in English):
