"ESCAPE ROOM IN THE NURSING CLASSROOMS".

Marta Vidaurreta is a lecturer at School in Nursing at the University of Navarra.

 

1.- Main advantages of using this methodology in the classroom.
Using this methodology has the advantage of placing student in a stimulating experiential learning environment where they inevitably have to put on internship the knowledge of subject and other skills and attitudes that are equally important such as communication, decision making, conflict resolution or critical thinking among others, to achieve a common goal , to leave the room in a certain amount of time. This methodology also fits with the profile of our student body, students who are quickly motivated to action, who respond and grow when faced with a challenge such as having to leave the room in a limited time. This methodology generates in them a healthy competition for wanting to go out and do it before the others and that results in an extra motivation towards playing and learning. Another advantage is that you see them in "the action", you see their reactions, their communication, getting them out of the chair and placing them in this environment allows you financial aid to get to know them beyond a grade exam. They also analyse themselves and are aware, on the one hand, what knowledge they do not yet have and on the other hand, what roles they adopt in these situations. financial aid helps them to get to know themselves and to know where they need to improve. I would also highlight the opportunity to work on perseverance; this activity teaches students to insist, to reformulate the problem, to be constant and to assume the group consequences of their decisions in a controlled environment. Finally, I would stress the overview that students need to put on internship in order not to lose sight of the narrative of the case and to follow that thread, in addition to giving an answer to a specific test . Each enigma and clue contributes to a higher goal and understanding this is the core topic for success...

2.- Practical aspects to be taken care of.
It is essential to have the case or story that is going to be the backbone of the activity very well defined and detailed. See the story from the outside and know at all times how the students have to act and what alternative paths they can take and how they should be redirected through the tests so that they follow the path we have planned.

3.- How long have you been using this methodology, in which subject?
This is the second course that I have integrated this methodology in my teaching. Firstly, I carried it out in a practical subject and this year I have implemented it in a theoretical subject . In both experiences, they had to put on internship the knowledge of subject, but I also incorporated knowledge from other subjects so that it would be a transversal escape room and the students could perceive the importance of having knowledge, even from other courses, available. The professional reality expects them to have their knowledge integrated and to be able to relate it, and teachers have the responsibility to make this evident, and this activity is a small contribution to achieving this.
