My dear sailor

This week we have the partnership of Franshesca, 3rd year student of the Degree in Spanish language and Literature. In this letter, a mermaid writes to her beloved sailor, trapped in the nostalgia of a love that time and distance have not been able to erase. Between the whispers of the waves and the wailing of the wind, she waits for him in the hope of a reunion that may never come.

My dear sailor:

A deep sorrow darkens even the innermost veins of my soul at the thought of you. Many moons ago, when the world was younger, the sea told me that you were on the last star in the universe, one that has no name. It told me that there was a crystal beach there, where the sand looks like snow and every grain is a broken dream.

Even though so much time has passed, every evening, when the sky is tinged with fire and the stars begin to be born announcing the nostalgic darkness, the seagulls ask me about you and the waves of the sea whisper your name. When tears fall down my cheeks like shattered angels, the shells recite poems you once wrote me and the wind sings all the melodies that were lost after so many nights.

Every minute, every instant, I miss your caresses and I dream of the day when a white sailboat will approach drawing trails on the water. My heart continues to burn from the fire of our romance. There are still powerful flames that create a fire so strong that it makes you see the hells as just a match. I know you still love me; on full moon nights I hear your cries tearing at the memories the palm trees shelter under their leaves. I hear how you call me so many times that the dawn answers for me and the sun cries in sorrow. I still talk to the fish about you, tracing your face in the water and pulling old memories from a forgotten drawer. I remember when we looked into each other's eyes, freezing time as if it were the soul of a cruel tyrant, both of us lost in a labyrinth of poems and roses.

The birds feel sorry for me, they cry every morning and scream at me to forget you, to wait for another unfortunate man to be lost in a violent storm. However, you are not just a man, you are a sailor in love who shattered my heart and an island with his departure. Someday this beach will disappear, the sea will dry up, the sun in a thousand pieces will break and my soul will wither. May you be shipwrecked again and return to this island before the dreams we dared to imagine so many years ago are shattered. May this moon be honey and not stone. May you embrace me again while you paint me blue, green, red...

I have waited too long for you lying on the sand, accompanied only by loneliness and praying to the wind to bring your white sailboat back to these shores. I know that you also hear me singing at dawn, I know that you also see me in your dreams and that you still desire me as strongly as you did so many years ago. Although we are different beings and our love seems impossible, I will wait for you. I will wait for you until the end of time, when the night ceases to exist and all the birds of the world are mute. This beach is ours and it will be until the sun goes out. Now then, I bid you farewell; see you in the next dream.

Yours to infinity:

Your siren.
