Inspiration from experience: a talk with Álvaro Delgado

"Behind every issue there is always a person".

Last Thursday, September 29, the University of Navarra received the visit of Alvaro Delgado, industrial engineer and current Head of Total Rewards at Verisure, who shared with the students an inspiring talk about his professional career and the lessons that have marked his path.

He recounted how curiosity, dedication and a passion for numbers, always with a approach on people, have guided his degree program. In his current position, he leads a team focused on compensation and benefits with a clear vision: "behind every issue there is always a person".

During the talk, he highlighted two core topic when making professional decisions. Firstly, the relevance of English as an indispensable tool in a globalized work environment. Secondly, the convenience of analyzing the role that the human resources department has within a business before joining it, recommending to choose organizations that really bet on this area.

He also stressed the importance of soft skills in the selection process. "Technical aspects are taken for granted; hard skills are a necessary but not sufficient condition. What defines who gets the vacancy is the rest," he said, inviting students to cultivate competencies such as communication, empathy and adaptability.

His experience as a consultant, and in particular his time at one of the Big Four(EY), was fundamental to acquire tools and forge a differential factor. For him, each work experience is a stepping stone that strengthens his professional career.

With a Philosophy focused on the growth of internal talent and the conviction that insistence, willingness and dedication have been key in his degree program, Álvaro invited us to reflect on an essential question: What makes us different and what value can we contribute? Differentiate yourself before others, that will help you grow," he advised.

Beyond achievements and responsibilities, he also shared a very human challenge : to find the balance between staff and professional life. A lesson that reminds us that true success goes beyond the workplace.
