Connecting the population with the world of art, a call effect through new inverse technologies.

project by Paula Solans

This is the intention of "El Jardín del Prado", in addition to taking advantage of the emblematic and characteristic place where it is located to connect, visually and programmatically, two cultural landmarks: the Prado Museum and the Royal Botanical Garden.

project by Paula Solans

A light volume, which is visually related to the Botanical Garden; allowing it to colonize our building with its vegetal universe; as if it were the gardens of the Del Prado paintings. A place to reconnect with art, culture and nature.

The idea is to create a glass envelope that encloses a fluid space in which volumes of different opacities and transparencies emerge. The building is developed on two underground levels and three above the place de Murillo; in them are born large spaces such as the central grandstand, which functions as a large interior place ; as well as multiple courtyards and gardens that blur the boundary with the Botanical Garden. All this, together with the transparency of the envelope, creates large spaces open to the light, losing at all times the feeling of being underground.

On the facade facing the city, a friendly volume is born, thanks to the vegetation of an English courtyard, discreet and permeable, which hardly protrudes in height, without breaking the image of the city.

The transparent envelope of the façade and the vegetation give a glimpse of the space it encloses. Designed as an open and fluid space, the interiors flow from a forest of thin circular pillars that organize the different spaces. By means of interior polycarbonate partitions for the more private areas and rails from which hang configurable metal curtains for the rooms of colloquium, a special atmosphere is generated thanks to the interplay between transparencies, lights and opacities.

The soul of the building appears as a large volume of the same Prado granite. A heavy and opaque chest, opposite in character to the rest of the building, which encloses the immersion rooms, "The Art Box".

The design of the building, with courtyards and gardens that blur the relationship between Botanico and Prado, is reflected in the theme proposal for the reverse conference room : the Prado Garden. This is accessed by going around one of the building's courtyards, creating the sensation of entering the gardens of the Prado paintings. The visit ends in the gardens of the building, making the inverse experience real.

The formal and visual contrast of this block further emphasizes the lightness and transparency of the rest of the complex.

Transparent photovoltaic glass rests on the structure of bars and nodes of the roof space grid, allowing the passage of installations, leaving them visible, creating a technological yet lightweight appearance.

The façade, carefully designed with a double skin of glass, is formed by an exterior halo held in place by a glass buttress that dematerializes the structure. This rib rests on a bracket anchored to the front of the slab where the second transparent enclosure appears. A ventilated chamber is created in the facade that insulates acoustically and protects thermally from the noisy exterior.

In this way, it creates a new space for the city of Madrid where citizens, art and nature can meet and interact.
