project Diego Berrogui

Carabanchel, located south of Madrid, is a district with an industrial B that is currently experiencing a creative boom. In this context, there is a growing need for spaces dedicated to both exhibition production and exhibition . For this reason, this project the development a comprehensive residency program artistic production space.

With its irregular L-shape, the plot has a strategic location that requires the project to be conceived project a major urban intervention. With two prominent party walls that determine the starting point, the proposal consider unified strategies at the block, plot, and building levels.

Although the palace is not considered historical heritage, the proposal the cultural and social value of the existing complex, especially the main building, which forms part of the neighborhood's collective imagination. This Issue will be restored to its original use as a future residential area. The rest, the chapel and Issue , will be demolished.

For the extension, the existing side wings are replicated and reinterpreted in three new heavy structures that symbolize the privacy of the program they house, such as the residency program work residency program areas. These volumes are accompanied by auxiliary spaces that represent a middle ground between the private and the public.

Finally, the transition culminates in the lightest and most public element of project: a translucent tube that runs through the plot, connecting the different spaces and taking advantage of the visible party walls to attach itself vertically to them. These two towers act as a visual attraction, functioning as a viewpoint and display for both the center and the art produced in it.

The design of the program seeks to facilitate coexistence and work resident artists and neighborhood residents. This interaction fosters community spirit without losing sight of each artist's individuality, through the differentiation of three core topic areas: the residential zone, artistic production, and public facilities, located along the tube.

The tube also shapes the outdoor spaces, bringing a new dynamism that transforms the area, actively integrating itself into the urban fabric and connecting and revitalizing the streets adjacent to the plot.

The metal structure of the tube, configured using UPN profiles, acts as a support for a double polycarbonate skin, both on the façade and on the roof, except for unique spaces, where the structure is raised to allow natural entrance , promote ventilation, and provide greater height to the spaces.

Thanks to the uniqueness of its construction system, the tube offers multiple possibilities for adaptation. This lightweight and versatile structure contrasts with the heavy concrete volumes, as well as with the renovated main palace.

All of this comes together to form a formal, unified elevation where the renovated building, the reinterpretation of the side wings, and the tube converge. The latter appears and disappears from view for the neighborhood's residents. The superimposition of these architectural layers gives rise to a dynamic, coherent composition, where the historic and the new engage in fluid dialogue.

The tube is inserted and attached to the different volumes, accompanied by an underground gallery that distributes the facilities throughout the complex. This configuration allows for the creation of different scenarios between interior and exterior, both in plan and section. This generates spaces and Structures evoke the atmosphere of many of the industrial warehouses that have been renovated in Carabanchel, establishing a formal and symbolic continuity with the context of the neighborhood.

project Diego Berrogui

With all of the above in mind, the tube not only represents a functional connection, but also becomes a symbol of project, with the goal raising awareness and promoting the artistic movement in Carabanchel.
