Evaluating and improving fire safety for electric vehicles in indoor car parks

The eRISIKO project (Electric Vehicles Fire Risk Assessment in Indoor Car Parks) aims to enhance fire safety in buildings in the context of the growing presence of electric vehicles (EVs) by developing a dynamic, AI-powered fire risk assessment tool for fire safety design and real-time assessment, supported by robust experimental data and integrated with energy management and regulatory studies.

The global transition towards electric mobility represents an emerging challenge for fire safety in buildings. Electric vehicle fires present unique characteristics due to their lithium-ion batteries, including:

  • Higher heat release rates

  • Prolonged combustion times

  • Risk of thermal runaway

  • Spontaneous reignition

  • Production of toxic gases

The eRISIKO project builds upon previous work from the EVRISK and EU FireStat projects, expanding the research scope to incorporate experimental investigations, advanced fire simulations, and foster wider collaborations between academic and industrial stakeholders.
