John Thwaites is Senior Associate Professor of Monash University and chair of Monash's Sustainable development high school and ClimateWorks Australia.

John is Chairman of Melbourne Water and director of the Fair Trade Australia New Zealand initiative. He is a past chair of the Australian Building Codes Board, past chair of the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and director of the Australian Green Building Council.

He is the chair of the committee National Sustainable development , which developed the project "Transforming Australia: report SDG progress 2018". He was previously chair of the National Sustainability committee , an independent committee appointed by the Australian Government, which produced the report Sustainable Australia in 2013.

He is co-chair of the committee Leadership network of the United Nations Sustainable development Solutions ("SDSN") driven by the United Nations University Secretary to provide expert advice and support for the development and implementation of the Sustainable Goals development .
