AREAS OF
KNOWLEDGE
The Department of Political Science and Sociology, comprised of several areas of knowledge, is affiliated with the School of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra.
TEACHING
ACTIVITY
It is offered mainly in the Degree at Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) although it also includes some subjects taught in other Degrees. Although primarily focused on PPE various subjects are offered in other degree programs.
INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH
It connects central themes of political science and sociology with other social disciplines such as geography and political economics, as well as other branches of knowledge, such as political and social philosophy.

The departmental research is reflected in the broad scientific, academic and societal outreach activities carried out by the faculty. Additionally, its commitment to serving society and fostering political and social action is reinforced by student organized activities.

Lines of research
Social theory and Philosophy of culture
Research regarding fundamental concepts such as identity, morality, freedom, recognition, cosmopolitanism, and social transformations, with hermeneutic and critical approaches. Analyses of contemporary (Bauman, Honneth) and classic (Aristotle, Kant) perspectives are highlighted, exploring topics such as globalization, multiculturalism and social acceleration.
Workcare and sustainability
Interdisciplinary study of work and its relationship with economic development, care as a hermeneutic and ethical position, and sustainability in political, economic and social contexts. Includes research on meritocracy, absenteeism, political polarization and development models.
Political thought and ideologies
Analysis of core political concepts such as sovereignty, common good, utopia and emancipation, as well as their application in contemporary debates (European Union, sovereignty discourses, social inclusion). Included are programs of study on political ideologies and the impact of emotions on political speech. Political ideologies and the impact of emotions on political speech are included.
Public space, inclusion and social transformation
Exploration of the dynamics of exclusion, segregation and their inclusive counterpart in public spaces. Examing issues of gender, migration and citizenship. This includes historical approaches, such as the role of political utopias in modernity.
Economics politics and corruption
The study of economic development from political and institutional approaches, with special attention to corruption, political connections and their impact on national economies; using China and other international contexts as case studies.
Religion, emotions and identity
Research concerning religion’s role in civil society and in the construction of identities, along with the emotional impacts on political and cultural processes. Phenomena such as "post-secular culture" and the interaction between religion and social transformation are explored.
Common good and common goods
Study of the common good from a neo-Aristotelian perspective, combining classical political Philosophy with contemporary approaches to institutional analysis (Ostrom, Buchanan). Topics such as common goods and their governance in economic and social contexts are addressed.

PPE student activities and initiatives
DEBATUN
A debate club that hones students rhetorical and argumentative skills via workshops, seminar, debates, etc in both Spanish and English, formed by students that seeks to train in rhetorical and argumentative skills through different formats and activities (workshops, seminars, etc.) and to encourage participation in circuits of discussion both in Spanish and English.
EVOLVE
A platform driven by students of the Degree PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) that aims to be a space for discussion and presentations where the problems of our time can be examined in a multidisciplinary way.
POLITICAL THINKING
This club is a space for reflection on topics related to politics, economics and philosophy. The approach is from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective. We aim to explore and debate ideas in depth, cultivating a space that favors an enriching intellectual development .
ÁGORA
Ágora's vision is to create as a space within the University of Navarra, dedicated to the critical analysis and understanding of contemporary political events.
