This project develops a sustainable and efficient biorefinery process from oil industry waste, more specifically, valorizing olive leaves. Thanks to a technology based on selective cascade extraction, combined with purification methods for extracts and active ingredients, the project will evaluate medical applications in advanced treatments for aggressive cancers and chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and fatty liver.
Preclinical models will be used to search for functionality of the xzylo-oligosaccharide (XOS), polyphenols, lipids and depolymerized lignin obtained in the process.
