Sport and adapted physical activity (hereinafter AFA) open a range of possibilities for athletes with disabilities and their families, which transcends the simple internship of physical activities or sports competition. It has been shown that sport is essential for improving the quality of life and well-being of people with intellectual disabilities (hereinafter ID), and that financial aid to their physical, emotional, social and cognitive health.
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities urges governments to facilitate the inclusion of persons with disabilities in sports, promoting their participation at all levels and ensuring access to appropriate facilities so that children and adults can practice and compete on equal terms. Likewise, the UN in the Sustainable development Goals, which call for quality Education and equality for all people. Similarly, the strategy of intelligent specialization of the Regional Government of Navarra insists on these commitments. Therefore, the summer course "The Transforming Power of Adapted Sport: The Road to Social Inclusion" is proposed.
The training is crucial in this process, as it provides new resources and perspectives in order to define best practices and strategies. The partnership between professionals from different spheres and the inclusion of people with disabilities in this training are essential to move forward, emphasizing the importance of listening, valuing and improving experiences in this field. This course seeks to highlight the relevance of including people with ID in recreational sport activities, showing how sport and AFA can contribute to the social, cognitive and physical development of these people and those who live and work with them. Each speaker will offer a approach from different perspectives related to the challenges of the world of sport and disability, urging action and reminding that every step taken is a step towards a more inclusive world. This course will delve into the different dimensions of adapted physical activity, offering resources, information and experiences to enrich the research and internship in the field of sport and AFA people with ID.
