Contest 'Incubator of probes and experiments'.
This competition is organised by the high school of Science of the data and Artificial Intelligence (DATAI) of the University of Navarra and the department of Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics of the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), with the partnership of the Navarra Society of Mathematics Teachers "TORNAMIRA" Matematika Irakasleen Nafar Elkartea; of the high school of Statistics of Navarra; and of the department of Education of the Government of Navarra and the provincial delegation of the high school National Delegation of Statistics.
It is aimed at students of E.S.O., high school diploma and Basic or Intermediate Training Cycles of Degree in Navarre with an interest in statistics and the science of statistics data. Teams of up to four students can participate with a teacher as tutor. They have to carry out a statistics and probability project on a topic of interest chosen by the team: society, health, ecology, Economics and consumption, environment... There will be a national phase and part of the award will be participation in the city where it is held.
To participate in the competition, send an email to incubadora@unav.es indicating the names of the members of group, the teacher, the centre and the category in which you are participating before April 2022. tutorthe centre and the category in which you are participating before 15 April 2022.
The deadline for submitting entries to submission is 1 June 2022. If the decision requires a public exhibition , the presentation to select the winners will be communicated directly to the participants.
The final phase of the Navarra edition will be held on 16 June 2022 (at schedule in the morning) at classroom Siemens Gamesa, ICS Building (University of Navarra).
The organisation reservation has the right to modify the conditions of the competition, including its possible cancellation, provided that there is a justified cause.
More information
-
To promote the teaching and learning of statistics at non-university educational levels.
-
To complement knowledge and competences as well as to disseminate the importance and usefulness of Statistics, Probability and Operational research in real life and in all academic disciplines.
-
To awaken among students an interest in Statistics, Probability and Operational research as a fundamental tool in the internship totality of sciences.
-
To familiarise students with the different steps in conducting a statistical project .
-
Learning to interpret the different statistical information that surrounds us and fostering a critical spirit.
Students enrolled in schools in Navarre in the 2021-2022 academic year and who are studying E.S.O., high school diploma or a Basic or Intermediate Training Cycle of Degree . Participation will be in group (with a maximum of 4 students). Each group must have a professor from their centre of programs of study as tutor. This person must supervise the work submitted.
There is no limit to the number of participants for a centre, nor to the number of works supervised by the same professor, although each student can only participate in a single work. Nor does it have to be carried out in the framework of the mathematics subjects.
Three categories of participants are established:
-
1st - 2nd ESO.
-
3rd - 4th year of ESO and Basic Training Cycles of Degree .
-
high school diploma and Training Cycles of Degree .
The participants in the competition will produce a work/project on statistics, probability or research operational, which will be presented as a text document. Afterwards, the finalists will give an oral presentation of their work at exhibition .
Authorship
The papers submitted must be entirely written by the participating students, unpublished and original. Research that has been plagiarised in part or in its entirety will not be accepted, and work not carried out by the students will also be invalidated.
In this respect, it should be noted that in the oral presentations the jury may ask questions to help assess the students' work.
Assessment of the works
The organisers will make a pre-selection of the works submitted, which will be sent to the jury for its decision.
The jury may include, among others, members of the high school of Science of the data and Artificial Intelligence of the University of Navarra, of the department of Statistics and research of the UPNA, of the TORNAMIRA Society and of the high school of Statistics of Navarra, who will be responsible for issuing a decision on the works presented. For this decision, the jury will mainly assess:
-
The originality of the chosen topic .
-
Clarity in the exhibition of objectives, phases of the project and results.
-
The correct application of statistical techniques (application of statistics in the design of the collection of data, correct statistical description of the data, statistical analysis of results, conclusions of the work of agreement to the objectives of the same).
-
The conclusions and critical analysis of project (possibilities for improvement of work and possible extensions).
-
The final report (orderly structure: table of contents, introduction, essay, appropriate choice of tables and graphs, results and conclusions).
-
Innovation in the presentation of results.
The jury's decision is final, and any of the prizes may be declared void at proposal of the jury.
Awards
Each student and tutor of the winning groups will receive a award (to be determined). The jury will also select the representative or representatives of Navarre in the national phase, to be held in Ciudad Real.
All participants and their guardians will receive a diploma certificate accrediting their participation. The submission awards and diplomas will be presented at a public event.
Publication
The winning works will be published on the DATAI, UPNA and TORNAMIRA websites with information about their authors, tutors and centre.
Frequently asked questions
The process by which we provide an answer to a relevant question using statistical techniques or those of research operative, and whose result is presented by means of a written report where the process followed is detailed and conclusions and/or proposals are obtained.
The topic of work is free. Among the fields in which the work can be developed are Society, Health, Ecology, Economics and Consumption, Environment, etc.
The project will consist of three parts:
-
Data collection.
-
Description, analysis and interpretation of the results.
-
Conclusions/recommendations/proposals.
Before taking the data, the question(s) we want to answer should be considered.
Data for the work can come from the following sources:
-
Survey designed by group through its own questionnaire associated with project.
-
Experimental plan to compare two products, two treatments or other similar situations. The proposed experiment can be related to one of the subjects the students are studying. Alternatively, an everyday phenomenon can be studied about which the students have a relevant question that can be answered by an experiment with the above structure. It should be noted that only the comparison of two products has been mentioned, as it is understood that the level of the students does not make it advisable to analyse comparisons of more products, although this possibility is not excluded.
-
Exploitation of instructions of existing data , such as those offered by official statistical institutes (Eurostat, I.N.E., regional statistical institutes) or similar bodies, usually accessible through network.
-
Simulation.
The presentation of work will consist of a written report (Office document, pdf or similar) in which you must specify, at least:
-
a maximum of 20 lines summary ;
-
the goal of the study;
-
the way in which the collection of data is carried out (depending on the case: design of the survey and choice of respondents; design and development of the experiment; reference letter to the source of the data; design of the simulation);
-
the description and analysis of the data;
-
the results obtained and the conclusions;
-
and possible improvements and extensions of the study.
You can see winning student entries from previous years at national level on the website of the Society for Statistics and Operations Research.
You must send the written report , which will have a maximum length of 30 pages. This report will be used by the members of the jury. If the work is selected, you may be asked to prepare a public and face-to-face presentation before the Jury that will select the winners. The report should be sent to the following e-mail address: incubadora@unav.es.
