This Double Master's Degree, of 100 ECTS credit and with a duration of 15 months, allows you to study the Master's Degree in Architecture (MUA) at the same time as the Master's Degree in design and Environmental Management of Buildings (MDGAE), both accredited official qualifications.

With these studies, one acquires the perceptive title that qualifies for the practice of the profession of architect in Spain and, on the other hand, one obtains the specialisation in the area of sustainability. As result, the professional profile of student is completed, making it more attractive in today's job market.

The Double Master's Degree offers a pathway to provide student with a clearly differential value, thanks to training aimed at quality professional practice, adapted to the new social, environmental and economic context and open to the international market.

development It synthesises professional knowledge around the project Final Degree that, through internships, workshops and training at business, enables students to undertake complex and collaborative projects in a changing and global environment, where management skills will allow students to undertake complex and collaborative projects. 

The project Final Degree is developed from the beginning of the master's degree, in small groups, permanently advised by a personal tutor and three professors from department of Construction, Installations and Structures, reaching the level of a real executionproject .

It trains experts in sustainability in building, both at design and in the quantification of the efficiency of the measures adopted; offering a large development in the field of environmental and constructive design , focusing on energy management (active and passive measures), the Materials (Materials sustainable, life cycle analysis), environmental certification of buildings (monitoring, LEED, BREAAM) and new construction systems.

In addition to the traditional knowledge in design and technical subjects, the master's degree adds a commitment to training in business to facilitate entrepreneurship and innovation as well as leadership, social commitment and teamwork. result of all this is that you will have adequate training to meet the challenges imposed by a globalised and competitive business market.

With an eye on the immediate present and the near future, the master's degree is committed to adding to the technical and design training, knowledge of leadership and management that opens up a new horizon in the professional profile of student and which will be taught in collaboration with professors from the IESE Business School

The subjects of business, through the case method, are combined with others specific to the architecture sector, developed by professors from School of Architecture and other professionals with a prestigious and solid professional background.

The curricular professional internships and the Master's Thesis, included in Study program, play an important role in the master's degree. Students will carry out compulsory internships in studios or companies to consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired during the classroom module. The practical training of students acquires a special importance with the completion of the Master's Final Project in a studio or business in the sector. This opportunity involves the application of all the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme in a real environment. With the completion of the TFM at business, the student has contact with the professional reality, acquires professional skills that facilitate their employability and foster their entrepreneurial capacity.

As both master's programmes are official, they can be used for doctoral studies at entrance .

As this is a qualifying master's programme, firstly, students acquire the skills to be able to practice the regulated profession of architect in Spain, to which is added specialised training in sustainabledevelopment (environmental, social and economic sustainability); in design of sustainable and regenerative buildings (design integrated almost zero consumption, active and regenerative buildings); in Quantification of sustainability (energy simulation and life cycle analysis); and in Validation of sustainable architecture (monitoring of buildings and environmental certifications). For all these reasons, the double master's degree qualifies student to work in architectural project teams, construction companies, engineering firms, consultancy and research for the performance of these professional tasks.

Among the possible employment opportunities are:

- design architectural studies and engineering (design and quantification of the passive measures of a new or refurbished architectural project ).

- design of the optimal active measures for each building, with special emphasis on renewable energy systems. Air conditioning, lighting and water management systems.

- Building monitoring (comfort sphere, sensors, thermo-flujimetry, etc.), thermography, infiltration studies, etc.

- Energy simulation of buildings with Design Builder, calculation of thermal bridges using THERM.

- Management, supervision and evaluation of civil works projects.

Module I: Projectual -12 ECTS credit-.

It consists of 12 ECTS credit, has a mixed character and is composed of three subjects:

  • subject 1: Projects, Composition and Urban Planning

5 ECTS CREDIT

Character: Compulsory

student is introduced through teaching in specific advanced workshops in the conception, practice and development of basic and execution projects, sketches, preliminary projects and urban projects. Including the drafting and management of urban plans at any scale. In both cases, the elaboration of functional programmes for buildings and urban spaces will be incorporated. As well as the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation of the built heritage and the development of architectural and urban criticism.

It offers students the acquisition of advanced training, of a specialised nature and multidisciplinary, oriented towards professional activity in the field of project management and construction management. The aim of goal is to provide a methodology for the conception and management of architectural and town planning projects, both as a whole and in each of its parts, taking into account theoretical, project and practical aspects.  

The student is introduced to the resolution of the complexity of current projects, with the integration of the technical developments, carried out or subcontracted, that make the unity and coherence of the project possible. It also provides students with concepts and strategies for innovation in the project process and for the provision of professional services.

Character: External Practices

As this is a professionally-oriented degree, the acquisition of competences linked to the professional development is ensured through activities of development of architectural projects (sketches, preliminary projects, basic and execution projects) or urban projects, carried out in architectural studios and/or companies in the sector that develop projects, both new construction and conservation, rehabilitation and restoration of the built heritage. For this reason, this module includes an external internship subject with a load of 3 ECTS credit (75 hours) that will be articulated in accordance with Royal Decree 592/2014 regulating external internships for university students. The content of these internships will allow student to acquire skills in composition, projects, urban planning, restoration, rehabilitation and works management.

The placement will be monitored and evaluated by a tutor of the business or institution and by an academic tutor of the university.

It consists of 8 ECTS credit, has a mixed character and is composed of two subjects:

Character: Compulsory

Through three advanced workshops, students are introduced to the conception, calculation, design and integration, in buildings and urban complexes, of Structures singular building, interior enclosure systems and finishes, as well as advanced systems for exterior enclosures, roofs and façades, as well as innovative installations for water supply and drainage, heating and air conditioning.

As this is a professionally-oriented degree, the acquisition of competences linked to the professional development is ensured through technical project development activities, carried out in architectural studios and/or companies in the sector that develop architecture and urban planning projects. For this reason, this module includes an external work placement subject with a load of 3 ECTS credit (75 hours) that will be articulated in accordance with Royal Decree 592/2014 regulating external work placements for university students. The content of these internships will allow student to acquire skills in the technical aspects of project: Structures, construction and installations.

The placement will be monitored and evaluated by a tutor of the business or institution and by an academic tutor of the university.

It provides student with the knowledge of business so that, in the future, it will be able to run and manage an architectural firm and/or a business of services related to Architecture and Urban Planning. From general issues of business to other aspects such as business analysis, accounting, finance, risk assessment and business strategy.

student is introduced to the management models and systems for managing people within organisations. The student acquires the necessary knowledge to develop their professional activity in collaboration with other professionals, from the effectiveness of the teamwork, leadership qualities, the improvement of negotiation skills with the rest of the agents, to the ethical reflections of their activity.

The knowledge and competences of the module of business (specific competences CE16 to CE21 not regulated by the Order EDU/2075/2010) will be acquired mainly through the study of practical cases with a specific methodology that will include an individual preparation of the case and a subsequent analysis and discussion in common that will conclude with a discussion in class directed by the teacher.

Module IV: project Final Degree -30 ECTS credit-.

It consists of 30 ECTS credit, is taken by all students, is a TFM and is made up of a single subject:

Character: Master's Thesis

An original project is prepared, presented and defended individually, before a university examining board that must include at least one professional of recognised prestige proposed by the professional organisations. The exercise will consist of an integral architectural project of a professional nature in which all the competences acquired in the degree course are synthesised, developed to the point of demonstrating sufficiency to determine the complete execution of the building works on which it is based, in compliance with the applicable technical regulations and management assistant .

essay The project Final Project provides student with the instruments for the technical execution and management assistant of the building and aims to be an exercise in synthesis of the skills and knowledge acquired during the training process and a general integration of all the subjects studied for the practice of the profession of architect.

Through project End of Degree the student acquires fundamental competences for their professional career, such as the ability to develop a project for the execution of a complete building with sufficient definition for it to be built, and the ability to draw up the necessary documentation (report, specifications, plans and budget) to carry it out.

Each student is assigned a tutor within the academic staff of the project Final Degree, which provides complementary academic support, supervises their internships as tutor intern and accompanies them throughout the entire development of the master's degree.

The project Final Degree is an annual programme, but it is structured in two parts differentiated by semesters: in the first semester (September to December) the student develops the sketch, with a dedication equivalent to 6 ECTS credit; in the second semester (January to June), the dedication increases by another 24 ECTS credit as the basic project and the project of execution are developed.

Module I: design Sustainable -30 ECTS credit-.

It consists of 30 ECTS credit, is compulsory and is made up of six subjects:

Character: Compulsory

The subject Principles of Sustainability introduces students to the concepts of environmental, social and economic sustainability in order to reduce the negative impacts on the planet and mankind. Students are also introduced to the concepts of sustainable and regenerative architecture, mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Through built examples, student learns about the different environmental aspects involved in the phases of the building process.

7,5 ECTS CREDIT

Character: Compulsory

This subject aims to provide students with the knowledge and tools necessary for the analysis and quantification of the behaviour of the building and its thermal envelope in winter and summer conditions, both in new construction and in the refurbishment of existing buildings, in order to meet current requirements for limiting energy demand.

To this end, student studies the physical principles of heat transfer in enclosures, the indoor environmental conditions of buildings related to the comfort and health of users, climatic variables and the influence of the environment on the design of the building.

  • subject 3: management of energy and water. Active measures

7,5 ECTS CREDIT

Character: Compulsory

subject which consists of the study and application of building installations, assessing at all times energy efficiency, performance and consumption reduction parameters, as well as the integration of energies, which enable the design of nearly zero consumption buildings.

The student studies the energy, economic and technological characteristics for the most appropriate choice of energy production sources, and their accumulation, distribution and emission.

It also analyses the possibilities of regulating and integrating the various types of installations in buildings in order to reduce the energy consumption necessary for their operation.

6 ECTS CREDIT

Character: Compulsory

The aim is to provide information on the most relevant aspects of the management of Materials and waste, as well as the tools necessary to reduce the associated environmental impacts in the construction of buildings.

student is introduced to the concepts of circular architecture, carbon footprint, environmental footprint, ecological footprint.

The student applies the Life Cycle Assessment method for the selection of Materials and building construction products to reduce the most significant environmental impacts of building construction.

The knowledge of the types of waste and the techniques for reuse, recovery and disposal of construction and demolition waste will make it possible to reduce the environmental impact associated with soil contamination and landscape deterioration.

The knowledge and evaluation of sustainable, innovative and healthy Materials contributes to improving the environment and the health of building users.

3 ECTS CREDIT

knowledge is provided on the different environmental certification systems for buildings that allow their environmental performance to be assessed in relation to different aspects (energy, Materials, water, land use, transport, indoor air quality...) with the aim of reducing the impact they have on the environment. goal .

It provides information on those environmental aspects not included in the previous subjects, which are considered necessary for the sustainability of buildings, as well as on construction systems that improve their environmental performance.

It consists of 14 ECTS credit, is optional, and is made up of one subject and 3 subjects:

The Master's Final Project is carried out in a business in the building sector in which environmental criteria are applied in their normal work.
