teaching e research are the founding objectives of the Chair de language y Cultura Vasca, which is why the classes, both in Basque and ethnology, began in the same year, 1964. Sponsored by the Provincial Council of Navarre, they were open to the interested public, not only to university students.

The teaching of José Miguel de Barandiaran in his monographic courses on Basque Ethnology (between 1964 and 1979) had repercussions on the training of disciples who later devoted themselves in different Degree to Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology.

The most renowned teachers at area of the language were Ana Echaide and the writer José Basterretxea, "Oskillaso".

The activity professor of these early years, somewhat withdrawn in the eighties after Barandiaran's retirement and the end of the Basque language courses funded by the University, took off again in the nineties with the creation of the Diploma de programs of study Vascos, degree scroll , the University's own. It offered 60 credits in subjects in Basque or in Spanish on Basque subjects, including the traditional subjects of Linguistics and Ethnology cultivated since the Chair, together with new courses in History, Art, Geography and Law, complemented by Seminars that delved into monographic subjects of the Basque cultural reality. The Diploma could be taken by any student student at the University and was very well received.

The current plans for programs of study have led to the disappearance of the specific degrees. However, the Chair has resumed the teaching through the gradual implementation of a pathway of programs of study Basque within the School of Philosophy.
