Identity is a complex concept, approached from various disciplines: psychology, pedagogy, anthropology, among others. In any case, despite the difficulties in defining it, identity always makes reference letter to the construction of a narrative about one's own life. It implies, in part, answering the great question that we have all asked ourselves at some point in our lives: who am I? The search for an answer to this question leads us to ask ourselves many other questions: How do others see me? What do I like about myself? What don't I like? What is my family like? Why am I this way and not another...? At final, what is my story? In the case of people with intellectual disabilities, this process of finding of oneself is especially complex, given the difficulties in several cognitive and psychological processes involved. Moreover, in the social narrative about people with disabilities, stigma, prejudices, deficit-centred gaze and ignorance are still common. Thus, this population encounters multiple barriers to constructing their identity in a positive way from childhood, including in the vision of themselves their limitations but also their strengths.
