Program

The Environment and Landscapes Program seeks to recover the sense of landscape as an expression -in territorial language- of what we are and what we do as human beings, individually and in society. By bringing students face to face with this reality, in dialogue with it, and learning to understand it in its scientific and cultural dimensions, we are committed to giving environmental reality primacy in university educational action at subject environment.

The program is developed through full days in the field, integrated in specific subjects of the Degree and in addition to those already offered by various subjects of the School. The territory is studied with an integral approach , in multiple outings to regional and national landscapes during the academic period. In addition, three international trips of at least one week's duration are made during the degree program .

The goal is to examine in situ, critically, at different scales, in different territorial and cultural contexts, and in an integrated manner, the impacts that changing human activity has generated and continues to generate on the people, cultures, ecosystems and landscapes studied, as well as the possibilities they offer and the challenges they face. In order to achieve this goal we count on the teaching of local professors with accredited environmental and cultural knowledge.

Academic staff

JORDI PUIG
Professor department Environmental Biology
"The greatest value of the natural and human world is perhaps only perceived by looking at it. The [environment and landscape] programme offers us an excellent opportunity to learn how to look at it, and to discover more about what it is to be human.

JESÚS MIGUEL SANTAMARÍA
Director from laboratory Integrated Environmental Quality
"The Environment and Landscapes Program offers a unique opportunity to explore natural spaces, scientific infrastructure, and highly relevant environmental issues. And with it, the assimilation of..." knowledge and the opening of new perspectives."

JOE R. McBRIDE
Professor Emeritus - University of California-Berkeley
"From the shores of the Pacific to the crest of the Sierra Nevada you will explore the variety of habitat, their importance to biodiversity, and management issues facing their stewardship".

JOHN EDINGTON
Director of the Centre for Environmental Studies (University College, Cardiff)
"Environment and Landscapes in South Wales (...). Daily excursions take us to three contrasting regions, the coastal development area, the coalfield valleys and the spectacular mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park".
Students
María Elisa Padilla
"The Landscapes Program invites us to appreciate and deeply understand the world around us. From the national parks of North America to the rainforests of Central America, it transforms the way we observe nature and makes us more aware of the impact we have on it."
JOSÉ MANUEL VASQUEZ
"The double Degree It has been an opportunity to understand how life and ecosystems relate to the current environmental challenges we face, and the tools to address them. The landscapes program is essential in this process, as it offers an on-site experience to integrate theory with practice. internship in diverse environments, emphasizing the importance of the balance between the natural and human environment."
MIRANDA PÉREZ
"I have had the opportunity to travel to Wales and various national destinations where we apply classroom knowledge in real-world environments. It is on-site where we truly learn and where we authentically approach what we study, observing practical and real cases."

The Environment and Landscapes Program (E&LP) is integrated into Study program of the Degree in Environmental Sciences and of the Double Degree in Biology and Environmental Sciences. It does not consist of its own subjects but is part of several subjects.

In this way, equivalences have been established between the field trips and their associated work and the ECTS credit, so that at this moment the Program totals a total of 20 ECTS CREDIT (the Degree is 240 ECTS credit and the Double Degree 339 ECTS credit). The complete E&LP includes (there could be some modification, as long as it is ensured that the formative objectives of the Program are met):
→ 6 ECTS credit on a global scale
→ 8 ECTS credit at the peninsular level
→ 6 ECTS credit at regional level

It is foreseen that the students participate in all outingsHowever, exceptions may be considered if duly justified. In such cases, the School of Sciences will ensure that all students receive the corresponding training .
enrollment and subjects

The program is part of the Study program of the Degree in Environmental Sciences and the Double Degree in Biology and Environmental Sciences, therefore it will be mandatory for all students pursuing these degrees.
The costs of local, national and international departures are included in the price of enrollment.
Passing the E&LP will be included in the European Supplement to the degree scroll of the Degree in Environmental Sciences.
The professor load of the Environment and Landscapes Program (E&LP) is distributed among the following subjects of the Degree in Environmental Sciences (subject to modifications):

Departure planning

The Environment and Landscapes Program (E&LP) is developed through full days in the field, in addition to the many others offered as part of the specific subjects of Degree in Environmental Sciences and the Double Degree in Biology and Environmental Sciences. In them, the territory is studied with an integral approach , in multiple regional, national and international landscapes.
The E&LP is therefore integrated in the Study program of Degree or Double Degree, in such a way that it is not an added course or a separate subject but is part of its learning methodology.
- International departures are scheduled for non-teaching periods.
- National departures are at weekends.
- Regional departures are full day departures.

By means of conference one-day field trips in the geographical environment of Navarre and neighbouring territories, we will address issues such as the analysis of the physical environment, the study of the impact of human action on the environment, or the possibilities and challenges posed by the interrelationship between the individual, society and the environment.
The trips take place on weekends and have a duration of 2 days. Our aim is to observe first-hand examples of the complex interaction between humans and the Earth, expressed in the wide range of diversity that exists on the Iberian Peninsula.
Wales: the visit revolves around Cardiff and the Bristol Channel, the South Wales coalfield and the Brecon Beacons National Park. We address -from the perspective of environmental management and conservation- issues such as the impact of human activity on wetlands, tidal power generation, mining activity in one of the world's major coalfields, the impact of recreational activities, the evolution of human settlement in the area, and the management of protected areas.
California, United States: Through a journey encompassing part of the California coast, the Sacramento Central Valley, the Sierra Nevada, and Yosemite National Park , we will study the ecology of the various ecosystems visited, agriculture in the region, and the management of its water resources, energy generation, mining and the Gold Rush, the history and evolution of human settlement in the region, and the management and conservation of natural spaces.
Costa Rica . Costa Rica stands out in the region for its environmental, democratic, and social progress indicators. There, students learn firsthand about initiatives that seek to promote... development Sustainable in its three dimensions: environmental, social, and economic. The tour includes visits to the Osa Peninsula, Corcovado and Irazú Volcano National Parks, and EARTH University.
Ecuador . Students explore the enormous diversity of Ecuador's Pacific, Andean, and Amazonian regions. Here, they examine the different relationships their communities establish with the environment and the implications of different models of development The aim is to highlight the connection between social and environmental problems.

Brief Information

The environmental and landscapes programme is an educational project specially designed for students enrolled in the degree in Environmental Science and a joint degree in Biology and Environmental Science at the School of Sciences (University of Navarra).

Its mission is to promote a deep scientific and cultural understanding of the inter-relationship between humans and the earth.

The program is neither an add-on course nor a specific subject, but rather a specific methodology of integrated learning as part of the overall academic program.

The programme is equivalent to 20 ECTS credit of in-situ, field work at three different geographic scales -regional, national, international- that involves the collaboration of diverse institutions and local agents from a number of countries.

All accommodation, transportation, and education cost derived from the program activities are covered by the degree tuition fees.

Finally, the "Environment & Landscapes Program" is not evaluated with normal exams, but rather through the evaluation of learning from the students' fieldwork.

We seek a critical and integrated understanding of the enormous challenges which are derived from the relationship between humans and the earth.
