Training activities

In the course of the first year of the doctorate, you will deepen your knowledge of a new modern language or deepen your knowledge of the language already studied at licentiate degree.

The management committee of the School, with the opinion of the Director of the doctoral dissertation, will determine whether the PhD student should attend to some seminars or monographic courses with a view to their research, even if the corresponding exams are not required.

Every fortnight, doctoral candidate seminars are held in which each doctoral candidate explains to the professors and doctoral students present the work carried out in his or her research, and answers questions raised by the audience during the presentation.

The doctoral cycle also includes, and fundamentally, research work under the supervision of a professor approved by School for at least three years in order to write a doctoral dissertation or doctoral thesis.

Ordinary students obtain the Degree of Doctor after passing the tests of the reading or defence of their doctoral dissertation before a tribunal of five members convened for this purpose by the management committee of the School. Once the doctoral dissertation has been approved, the total publication or at least a substantial part of the thesis is required in order to obtain the title of Doctor.

FORMAL ASPECTS FOR THE PRESENTATION OF DOCTORAL THESES (PDF)

For the writing of the thesis, you can follow this template template (Word) and take into account the following layout tips (PDF) the doctoral dissertation.

Once the thesis has been completed, the student - with the prior permission of the Director of the work - may submit a copy at the Secretary's Office, for final assessment, at any time during the course. The lecturer advisor has a period of one month to inform the interested party of his or her observations, which will be communicated via director of the thesis. Theses deposited after 20 May may be submitted for assessment, but will only be read from September onwards, i.e. they will remain for the following academic year.

For the defence of the thesis, eight copies of the thesis must be submitted to the Secretary's Office, signed by Director , and the registration and payment of the established fees must be formalised. One copy of the thesis will be returned, stamped, to the author.

In addition, the graduate must present at the same time:

a) A summary in Spanish and in English of the content of the thesis not exceeding 250 words, both on paper and on computer support, according to the following instructions: SEE INSTRUCTIONS(PDF). These abstracts are intended for the file of the thesis made in Spanish universities.

b) The "Agreement form" so that the thesis can be included in the publication "Dissertation Abstracts International". This form, together with the instructions translated into Spanish to facilitate its completion, can be found at the following link: ABSTRACTS INTERNATIONAL(PDF).

A period of at least fifteen days will elapse between the date of submission of the eight copies of the thesis at the Secretary's Office and its reading. The Secretary's Office will inform PhD student in writing of the date, time and place of the defence of the thesis. The date of the defence may not be earlier than three calendar years after the acceptance of student at doctoral program.

The defence of the PhD thesis will take place in a public session before a panel of five professors.

To obtain the title of Doctor (Doctor renuntiatus), once the corresponding Degree has been obtained, the publication of the thesis, in whole or in part, is required.
