"The amount of waste generated is a problem, as approximately 350 million tons of plastic waste is generated each year."
Do you consider it important to focus on the fight against plastic pollution?
Yes, it is very important, as we are currently facing a growing problem in both the production and management of plastic waste. In relation to production, in the last 20 years plastic production has doubled, with a significant environmental impact related to the production processes. The amount of waste generated is a problem, as approximately 350 million tons of plastic waste are generated each year, of which between 1 and 2 million tons end up in the oceans, seriously affecting marine biodiversity. In addition, less than 10% of plastic is properly recycled, increasing the risk of environmental contamination.
How can this problem be addressed from your research area ?
Our group focuses on the development of methods, methodologies and metrics to help the sustainable management of organizations and companies at nano, micro, meso and macro levels. At any of these levels we can help to improve the management, production, consumption and/or recovery of plastic materials and compounds.
Are you participating in any project related to this issue?
Our research group is already actively working on this issue through the PIP project , in partnership with the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa. This project focuses on the industrial plastic value chain and its recovery, with the goal of supporting the transition towards a local plastic circular Economics , which is inclusive and generates value. Specifically, we are mapping the industrial plastic value chain, characterizing the different actors and types of plastics and analyzing the possibilities of recovery and recycling to close the plastic cycle and reduce its environmental impact.
