Biodiversity and the Impacts of Mining and Climate Change in the Andean-Amazon Basin of Madre de Dios, Peru: A Decade of programs of study

The Andean-Amazonian Madre de Dios basin stands out as a core topic y biodiversity hotspot and ancestral territory. It is currently severely threatened by unregulated gold mining and deforestation. Factors such as the Interoceanic Highway and the pandemic have exacerbated the lack of governance and the shortage of taxonomic programs of study across its altitudinal gradients.
After more than a decade of research, it is clear that aquatic communities (fish, macroinvertebrates, and plankton) actively respond to these changes. These species serve as powerful bioindicators for assessing the degradation caused by extractive activities and diagnosing the impact of climate change.
