LIFE URBAN KLIMA 2050
Urban Klima 2050 is the largest climate action project in the Basque Country, co-financed by the European LIFE program, whose goal is to promote adaptation to climate change through a deep and sustainable transformation of the territory
Through more than 40 concrete actions, Urban Klima 2050 acts at three levels: governance, planning and internship execution. Initiatives include improvements in the energy efficiency of buildings, urban renaturalization, climate risk analysis and citizen participation. Its collaborative and multi-sectoral approach ensures a coordinated response between administrations, companies, research centers and civil society. The project seeks to strengthen the resilience of the territory, protect the health and welfare of the population, reduce inequalities and lay the instructions for a fair and effective climate transition in the Basque Country.
Objectives
Implement the KLIMA 2050 Strategy of the Basque Government, integrating climate adaptation into policies, plans and actions at all levels of government.
Reduce the vulnerability of the territory to the impacts of climate change, especially in urban environments and sensitive areas.
Promote effective and participatory climate governance, improving coordination between public administrations, the private sector, social agents and citizens.
Develop and implement practical and demonstrative solutions that serve as a model for future climate policies, such as energy rehabilitation, green infrastructure or water management .
promote social awareness and training , facilitating access to knowledge and fostering a culture of adaptation and resilience to climate change.
Measure, evaluate and scale the results to ensure their replicability in other territories and guarantee a sustainable and lasting transformation.

WHY IS THIS project NECESSARY?
The Basque Country, like many other European regions, is already experiencing the effects of climate change such as higher temperatures, more intense rainfall, and an increased risk of floods and heat waves. The LIFE Integrated Urban Klima 2050 project aims to address these challenges by promoting different actions and pilot projects that implement climate change mitigation and adaptation measures that improve the resilience of the territory.
WHAT SOLUTIONS IS THE URBANKLIMA project STUDYING?
The project defines several lines of action: 1) Systemic analysis of a municipality's climate risks and their cascading effects. This allows municipalities to identify the most critical risks and prioritize policies to reduce their impact. 2) Improvement of climate governance models by identifying barriers and good practices to achieve more effective coordination between levels of government and core topic actors and, finally, 3) Carrying out climate awareness activities aimed at the university public with the goal of increasing their awareness of climate change in the Basque Country.
how does this project affect society?
Providing solutions that help improve the resilience of the territory in the face of climate change has a positive effect on society as it increases its quality of life.
