PYRENEES4CLIMA
Mountains, guardians of unique biodiversity, are undergoing remarkable transformations at an unprecedentedly rapid pace. The ecosystem services they provide, from water sources to natural habitats to forest resources, are threatened by the effects of climate change of our own making.
The project LIFE-SIP PYRENEES4CLIMA "Towards a climate resilient cross-border mountain community in the Pyrenees", is led by the Community of work of the Pyrenees (CTP) through the Pyrenean Observatory of Climate Change (OPCC). The project has as goal to implement the Pyrenean Climate Change Strategy (EPiCC), the first European cross-border climate change strategy in Europe.
Objectives
We support integrative adaptation and mitigation measures that will create positive synergies to radically improve the resilience of the Spanish-French-Andorran Pyrenees region to Climate Change, and the project LIFE-SIP PYRENEES4CLIMA supports its full implementation. The strategy follows the principles of:
CROSS-BORDER COOPERATION
promote interaction between Pyrenean regions by identifying common priority adaptation measures and harmonizing them with regional and national efforts.
KNOWLEDGE GENERATION AND TRANSFER
promote the interdisciplinary and inter-territorial knowledge , the identification of experiences and good practices, their valorization and transfer to all territories and sectors of the Pyrenees.
INNOVATIVE ACTION
Explore, promote and engage in innovative approaches, both technological management and governance, that foster the connection between science, policy, internship and society.
SYNERGISTIC ACTION WITH THE CTP'S PYRENEES STRATEGY
promote synergies with sectors and with mitigation actions and the integration of climate change in the actions of other areas and sectors of the 2018-2024 Pyrenees Strategy.
EUROPEAN AND INTERNATIONAL VISIBILITY
To contribute to the European and international visibility of the climatic specificity of mountain areas and the transboundary nature of the Pyrenees.
It involves 46 partner organizations from the seven member territories of the CTP, such as Navarra, Nouvelle Aquitaine, Occitanie, Euskadi, Aragon, Catalonia and Andorra, and is articulated around 5 fundamental pillars: understanding climate impacts, improving the resilience of natural spaces, adaptation of the mountain Economics , protection of the population and the territory against natural-climate risks and deterioration of resources, and enhancement of an innovative system of climate governance involving citizens, the partner-economic sectors, the academic community and the decision-makers of the management policy.
This project will accelerate climate policies in the region, and will also strengthen strong governance based on territorial climate cooperation. It is a flagship project based on joint commitment, and ensures a permanent dialogue between the parties to effectively and efficiently address climate change adaptation policies.
