LIFE-SIP PYRENEES4CLIMA
Towards a climate-resilient transboundary mountain community climate-resilient mountain community in the Pyrenees
The LIFE-SIP PYRENEES4CLIMA project goal to implement the first cross-border climate change strategy in Europe in a mountain area. Led by six regions (New Aquitaine, Occitania, Aragon, Catalonia, Basque Country and Navarre) and one State (Andorra), it is articulated through the Pyrenean Climate Change Observatory (OPCC), coordinated by the Community of work in the Pyrenees (CTP).
main goal
support for the epicc
Support the comprehensive implementation of the Pyrenees Climate Change Strategy (EPiCC), in order to promote integrated adaptation and mitigation measures that generate positive synergies and strengthen the resilience of the Pyrenees (Spain-France-Andorra) to climate change.
Specific objectives
Improve the resilience of Pyrenean ecosystems and territories in the face of climate change.
Promote demonstrative actions in five core topic systems: climate, natural areas, mountain Economics , population/territory and governance.
Strengthen the implementation of European, national and regional climate policies through territorial cooperation.
Actuation systems
The Biodiversity and Environment Institute BIOMA of the University of Navarra participates in goal 2 (Resilient Natural Spaces), through the study of the effect of climate change on sensitive ecosystems such as peatlands and air quality, as well as on the proliferation of invasive species, and goal 4 (Population and Territory), through the study of the effects of climate change and air quality on the health of the population, with a "One Health" approach .
Understanding climate change
Resilience of natural ecosystems
Adaptation of mountain Economics
Protection of the population and the territory
Promoting new climate governance

WHY IS THIS project NECESSARY?
The Pyrenees, like all mountain areas, is a region particularly sensitive and vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The project is necessary because, despite its environmental, social and economic relevance, this territory is subject to seven regional climate change policies from three countries - France, Spain and Andorra - which, for the most part, do not adequately address two core topic factors: the specificity of the mountain environment and the need for a coordinated cross-border approach .
Given this status, there is an urgent need to develop a joint strategy that transcends administrative borders and allows climate challenges to be addressed from an integrated perspective and adapted to the particularities of the territory. The strategy considers climate change as a "background factor" that interacts with multiple territorial dimensions -geographical, socioeconomic and institutional-, directly affecting the region's adaptive capacity.
WHAT SOLUTIONS IS THE PYRENEES4CLIMA project STUDYING?
LIFE-SIP PYRENEES4CLIMA proposes a series of concrete solutions to improve the resilience of the Pyrenean territory to climate change, aligned with the five systems defined by the EPiCC strategy. The work of the University of Navarra focuses on the creation of high quality indicators to assess the impact of climate change on sensitive ecosystems (particularly peatlands) and biodiversity, as well as on the application of the "One Health" approach , integrating environmental and human health in the face of problems aggravated by climate change.
how does this project affect society?
The LIFE PYRENEES4CLIMA project will have a direct impact on Pyrenean society by strengthening the resilience of the territory to climate change, protecting the most vulnerable communities and guaranteeing the provision of core topic ecosystem services such as water, clean air and thermal regulation. It will also promote a transition towards a sustainable and diversified mountain Economics , promoting activities such as agriculture, forestry and tourism adapted to the new climate context. The project will also promote the active participation of citizens, environmental Education and technical training of local agents, and will contribute to improving transboundary governance through coordination between regions and countries.
