ICS, research in Humanities and social sciences at the service of society
The report presented here brings together the activity and achievements of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) during the 2024-25 academic year. Thanks to the effort and dedication of the team that makes up this research center, as well as the commitment and generosity of our donors and sponsors, we have been able to continue promoting pioneering, exciting and challenging projects that contribute to putting the Humanities and social sciences at the service of society.
This year, we have received four competitive grants from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, a European Erasmus+ project and a project supported by the Chanse network . We have also been supported by numerous private entities that have given us their trust and financial aid: John Templeton Foundation, Funciva, Fundación Ramón Areces, Fundación 'la Caixa', Fundación L'Ontano, Fundación Tatiana Pérez de Gúzman, Fundación Dignia, Fundación Pía Aguirreche, Fundación SOMOS, Fundación IDEA, Fondo Colibrí, Fundación Fuentes Dutor and The True Colours Trust. Our deepest thanks to all for their invaluable support, partnership and enthusiasm.
We have also achieved important milestones, such as the development of the ICS 2024-25challenge "Orientalism and Occidentalism: crossed views". Through this interdisciplinary project , we have had the opportunity to analyze and discuss the relationship between East and West from a multifaceted perspective, with researchers from 11 countries. We have also promoted a series of Atlases that portray the status of palliative care in the world, following the criteria established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Specifically, this year we have presented those dedicated to the Asia-Pacific and Europe regions, acore topic tool to raise awareness and promote improvements in this field. In addition, we have participated in the clinical essay Bohemia, a pioneering study conducted in Kenya that supports the use of ivermectin to control malaria.
The achievement of these goals would not have been possible without the researcher talent that the ICS brings together, which has been recognized in important awards and calls, such as the Ramón y Cajal and Fulbright scholarships. Both locally and internationally we have continued weaving networks and establishing partnership agreements with institutions such as the Government of Navarra and the Emirate of Sharjah, among others.
And, following the compass set by our mission statement, we have carried out activities of scientific and social impact, through conferences with experts in core topic such as health, geopolitics and Economics, training courses, and events such as Despierta by Infinity, a large-scale meeting for young people held in Guatemala.
From here, I reiterate our sincere thanks to all the people and organizations that have made it possible for our institution to continue growing with their support and trust. Thank you for continuing to support research from an innovative, creative, free and, above all, deeply human point of view.

challenge ICS. "Orientalism and Occidentalism: crossed gazes".

An interdisciplinary team of researchers from different groups of the center, in partnership with visiting researchers, has developed an intense study on how the West and the East have seen, explained and represented each other, and analyze the discourses that have been produced, especially as a result of decolonization and the consequent changes in the identity of nations. Through this challenge, the roots, structure and uses of these dialectics are analyzed at the political, historical, literary, artistic, linguistic and educational levels.
