Trajectories towards an adult identity
idADULT
presentation
How do young people navigate the transition to an adult life? What processes lead them to find their place in life?'Trajectories towards an adult identity' (idADULT) seeks to understand the complexity of youth transitions and their effects on the identity, beliefs and well-being of young people. To do so, it starts from the model of Identity Capitala psychosocial approach to the life cycle that integrates a double perspective. On the one hand, from the sociologyIn the first place, it assumes that global economic and political changes have altered the normative Structures in Western societies, enhancing individualism. On the other hand, from the point of view psychologicalIn the case of the "self-determination" program, elements such as self-esteem, self-efficacy, purpose and character are taken into account.
Thus, through tangible resources, such as Education, family structure, social ties and financial resources; and intangible resources, such as self-esteem and self-efficacy, the young person accumulates identity capital. This allows them to develop their own personality and surround themselves with a community that validates them as adults, enabling them to successfully negotiate the challenges of adult life in modern society.
Between 2019 and 2023, the group Youth in transition of the ICS carried out thePATHTOADULT project , which generated a theoretical framework , supported by empirical indicators, to assess the current challenges of this vital period and its effects on young Spaniards.Trajectories towards an adult identity' (idADULT) seeks to give continuity to this project with a longitudinal and retrospective approach .
Hypothesis:
→
As a starting point, we expect a complex, non-linear relationshipbetween the issue of transitions (professional, residential and relational), the development of an adult identity, and well-being.
Although some issue of transitions may increase identity resolution and well-being, it is expected that, beyond a certain point, a higher issue of transitions will be a reflection of instability and lack of identity resolutionThe impact on the wellbeing of young people can be negative.
Objectives
1
Conduct a second wave of the PATHTOADULT project , three to four years later, with longitudinal and retrospective information.
2
Identify the conditions conducive to a satisfactory and successful process of adult identity construction ( success sequence).
3
To analyze the variability in the trajectories of transition to adulthood, its relationship with identity training , and its contribution to well-being.
4
To examine the moderating and mediating factors that influence the relationship between transitions to adulthood and identity training , such as social support, socioeconomic status, and cultural context.
5
Compare intra- and inter-personal effects, i.e., differences between individuals in the experience of transitions as well as changes in an individual's identity over time in relation to their own transitions.
6
To assess the stability and plasticity of identity, beliefs, and preferences over time, considering how transitions to adulthood can generate both short- and long-term changes in young people's identity.
7
To provide recommendations for policies and programs aimed at supporting the transition to adulthood and promote healthy identity development in youth, based on the findings of the longitudinal study.
