The research group 'Public discourse' focuses on the applications of linguistics and discourse analysis to the social problems of our time. In the framework of applied linguistics and discourse analysis numerous methodologies have been developed to understand human communication in its social, linguistic and multimodal aspects.
The researchers in the 'Public discourse' group apply their knowledge of different languages and their theoretical mastery of sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics, pragmatics, analysis of speech, multimodality and narrative analysis, to analyse current social discourses in politics, business, media and social media. This approach allows them to shed light on topics as diverse as Arab migration in Navarra, adolescents at risk of social exclusion, digital misogyny and hate speech.
The main lines of research are:
- Political discourse
- discourse, interaction and conflict in social networks
- migration and social integration
- strategies to foster critical thinking and media literacy (educating for critical understanding of media discourses).
