In recent decades, reproductive patterns have changed profoundly: birth rates have declined, and people are having children later and later. In many countries, the fertility rate no longer reaches the level needed to ensure generational replacement, which has economic, social, and psychological consequences. Although classical economic theories explained these trends based on factors such as the opportunity cost of work or the exchange (the idea that families choose between having many children or investing more in each one), recent research shows that these explanations are now insufficient.

Thus, research on motherhood and fatherhood incorporates new perspectives that focus on social and cultural factors. Aspects such as negotiation within the couple, gender equality, time spent on child-rearing, religion, social norms, and the influence of the immediate environment are key to understanding how and why people decide to have children today.
