School of Communication

Every year, professors, doctoral students and students from the School of Communication cross borders to teach, research or learn in other countries. They do so with a backpack full of knowledge, questions, curiosity and a desire to share. They return with new perspectives, unexpected friendships, fresh ideas and a broader vision of the world.

Since 1958, international outreach has been very present in the DNA of communicators, both because of the diversity of our students' backgrounds and because of the travels of those who are part of Fcom.

Teacher internships

Our professors combine academic internship with the constant desire to update and continue learning. This attitude leads them to participate in international internships that allow them to broaden their lines of research from a global perspective. Thus, the classroom becomes a space where different perspectives, trends and approaches converge to prepare students to better understand the world of communication.

Ruth Gutierrez, Aurken Sierra and Fernando López Pan, professors at the School, share the experiences of their international stays during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Our professors combine academic internship with a constant concern for updating and learning.

University of Hawaii

Ruth Gutiérrez, professor of Scriptwriting and Epistemology of Communication has taught during the 24-25 academic year at the University of Hawaii at Manoa thanks to a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residencescholarship .

He confesses that "I have had the opportunity to combine research in the department of LLEA, Languages and Literatures of Europe and the Americas; with teaching in the subject Spanish Cinema and Literature and Introduction to Hispanic Cinema".

During her stay on the island she found her favorite corner in the Hamilton Library, where she has been able to explore spaces and immerse herself in Asian collections in order to enjoy one of her favorite hobbies, reading.

Free University of Brussels

Aurken Sierra is a professor of Political Communication at the School and has completed a research stay at the School of Governance of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. During a semester he was part of the team of the Centre for Digitalisation, Democracy and Innovation (CD2I).

"Being in the capital of the European Union, I have been able to attend events organized by international institutions, which has been an enriching experience. In addition, a semester without teaching has allowed me to attend and present at several international conferences and to deepen my research on the intersection between democracy, governance and sovereignty".

"In my stay at the Journalism Studies Center at the University of Vienna, I have deepened the study of the boundaries of journalism with other communicative practices that are close, sometimes apparently the same in style and form, but different in their objectives and social function," he explains.

Doctoral student stays

The School 's doctoral students are trained to combine teaching and research, and during their doctoral thesis they undertake an international stay during one of the four years of their doctorate. These stays, the duration of which varies according to the projects and the researchers themselves, provide the doctoral students with staff and academic growth. Carlos Lancho, Nacho Laguía and Blanca Basanta, doctoral students at the School, agree that immersion in other cultures and integration into the research groups of the respective universities give meaning to the experience.

Carlos Lancho (Bergen, Norway, and Oxford, UK)

Carlos Lancho, PhD student at the School, has completed two doctoral stays, one at the University of Bergen in Norway and the other at the University of Oxford in London.

At the University of Bergen he was able to continue his research on algorithms and their discrimination to different segments of the population in the department Information Science and Media programs of study . From his experience he highlights "the splendid landscapes, the fjords that bathe the mountains and the legendary forests of Norway. Not only did I take with me new friends and unique experiences, but also a genuine desire to return. During his stay at Oxford University, he highlights the privilege of having been part of a leading team in the research of the study of algorithmic tools, with whom he has been able to work "side by side".

"The Oxford Internet Institute (OII) is one of the most prestigious institutions in the world in the study of digital dynamics and their social impact. My doctoral thesis , which has a human rights subject , has been strengthened thanks to the advisory service I received from professors and other doctoral students".

Nacho Laguía (Texas, United States)

Nacho Laguía has completed his research stay at East Texas A&M Commerce, where he combines his thesis work with attendance to the Children and Adaptation classes.

Her doctoral thesis deals with the adaptation of Disney's literary fairy tales, what model they create to adapt the stories from fairy tales to film, and the changes implied by the arrival of postmodernism in the 21st century. During her research she has been mentored by Rebecca Rowe, an expert professor in Film Adaptation and editor of the International Journal of Disney Studies.

"In addition to the weekly classes with Professor Rowe, I have been able to participate in three international conferences, submit several articles to academic journals and deposit my doctoral thesis . It has been a period of hard work and learning, where I have learned a lot about the American university culture, which has also been very enriching for my training", she says.

Blanca Basanta (Turin, Italy)

Blanca Basanta, PhD student at the School, is doing a research stay at the department of management and Production Engineering of the Politecnico di Torino. Despite her research in the field of social sciences, her doctoral thesis is theoretical and the engineering university allows her to enrich her research with an internship on how different aspects of technology and digital tools are developed.

Blanca says that "these months in Turin have been a time to read, think and write calmly. Beyond academics, the experience has been extraordinary. Getting to know the country from, the reserved character of the northern Italians and their solid humanistic training in the great classics, or the beauty of living in a city overlooking the Alps are the things that are truly enriching me the most".

Student internships

In goal to enhance the international outreach of our students and put into internship the theory learned in the classroom, the students of the Degrees of Journalism with the Global Journalism diploma and the Degree of Audiovisual Communication with Screen Studies make several trips during the course to work on global projects.

The 2nd year students in the Global Journalism and Screen Studies program culminate the course with a two-week trip to Miami, where they attend classes at the School of Communication and create audiovisual works to address global issues.

As a finishing touch, the Global Journalism program includes a trip to Brussels, during which fourth-year diploma students learn about the European institutions based in the Belgian capital. In addition to getting to know the workings of these bodies from the inside, students have the opportunity to make contacts during the visits, thanks to meetings with correspondents, lobbyists and communicators.
