Guardians of the sky: the Sun and Moon in the pre-Columbian worldview

On August 12, 2026, Spain will witness a total solar eclipse, an exceptional event that is already beginning to mobilize scientists, educators, and astronomy enthusiasts.

With this in mind, the University of Navarra Science Museum is organizing a lecture series, "Mondays in the Sun," which addresses the phenomenon from various perspectives—scientific, philosophical, and historical—to accompany us in the countdown to this unique moment.

On this occasion, we propose this lecture will be given by José Luis de Rojas y Gutiérrez de Gandarilla,Senior Associate Professor the department American History at the Complutense University of Madrid; Francisco Gil Garcia, director the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of America at the Complutense University of Madrid; and Pilar Latasa, professor of American History at the University of Navarra. Two worlds, one sky. From the Mesoamerican and Andean perspectives, we will explore the profound symbolism of the sun and moon as sacred celestial bodies in pre-Columbian religions, which regulated the relationship between human beings and the cosmos, impacting their conception of time and power, as well as rituals and customs in everyday life.

registration required. On the day of the event, entrance until fill in .
