Passion for beauty

When the sad news of Jesús del Pozo's farewell to this world reached me, my head began to fill with infinite images and memories of the man who was a "pilgrim of beauty", as his great friend Fernando Aguirre called him. The closest and most repeated image of this genius of Spanish fashion is the greeting he dedicated to us after each collection, with a gesture between shy and a little tired, but wrapped in a happy smile. This master, despite not feeling well due to the pulmonary emphysema he suffered, continued to work tirelessly to surprise us, season after season, with his sublime colors, his well-constructed lines and the unmistakable stamp of each of his creations. You could guess, in everything he did, his eagerness to enhance the beauty of women, to which he gave a modern and classic, avant-garde and groundbreaking air, always with the magic touch of a man sure of what he had in his head, with that "duende" that was part of his creative mind and his artist's hands since the beginning of his degree program. He immortalized it when he launched his first perfume, with this name, the best description of that indefinable something that moves special beings.

He knew that many women dreamed of dressing with an authentic Jesús del Pozo; that is, with class, harmony, balance and good taste. From the catwalk, when he presented his collections surrounded by the models, he smiled at the applause of the audience, his audience, who stood up after each fashion show, to thank the master for another of his aesthetic boasts with which he had made us enjoy and dream.

In his workshop in Almirante Street in Madrid he received his clients to prepare one by one his unrepeatable creations. With his character, very Spanish, serious and strong, behind which loomed an enormous capacity to focus on the detail, with that savoir faire with which the French define a person like Jesus, intelligent, always in place, able to give the magic touch to each dress, he worked without looking at the clock. How many times I told him over the many years that I followed him closely work: "Jesus, in Paris you would have been one of the greats of Haute Couture". My best memory, in this sense, were the fittings that he made me, with real illusion, for a suit that I premiered in the T of TELVA in 1998, award that he obtained the following year, in 1999.

I will never forget his skill and his delicacy to build that evening blue organza suit, with a minimalist, perfect cut and an ankle-length skirt with special bows that he placed, one by one, topped with his long fingers, very thin, like brushes in the hands of an artist. I wore it for the first time at that TELVA gala party. Esperanza Aguirre, then Minister of Culture, who was dining at the presidential table, was ecstatic with my dress. When she heard that it was yours, her comment was: "You should be proposed for the Gold Medal of Fine Arts. And they gave it to you, Jesús. And, since you, many Spanish designers have received it, whom you have always led, putting our fashion back on track from the association of Spanish Fashion Creators of which you were president.

This award was presented to you by H.M. King Juan Carlos, in one of those enchanting courtyards of the Palace of the Royal Alcazars in Seville. You were accompanied by your family and friends, among whom I had the immense fortune to meet. You were introduced by Antonio Gala who, with his words, turned your art and your work into poetry. That night that today comes to me with force to the report, makes me think and I tell you from this page of TELVA, that beauty is one of the attributes of God. How you will be enjoying having found it forever, although here you have left a void too deep! At the next Fashion Week in Madrid you will be among us again. We will be filled with nostalgia and affection as we contemplate your last creations, the ones you made when you could hardly breathe. Among our excited and grateful applause, very close to the Eternal Beauty, you will hear a resounding and sincere Thank You Jesus!
