project Argos. The Great Books Seminars at Education Secondary School.
Several educational currents have been claiming for years the importance of Humanities in the Education of young people. Among them is the Great Books movement. Born in the United States, it has begun to spread to other continents. In Spain, the University of Navarra launched a Great Books Program in 2014. With the goal to transfer that experience to the teaching secondary, in the 23-24 course, the Civic Humanism Center started a project of research and transfer in which currently participate, through a partnership agreement, 11 educational centers, with more than 7,000 students.
Objectives
The goal is to determine the best way to introduce the Seminars in the curriculum educational Spanish. The purpose of the Seminars is not, mainly, to improve the reading and writing skill , but to develop intellectual and ethical skills or habits in the students. The aim is to help young people cultivate their inner world through contact with the Humanities. To this end, the project offers training to teachers, designs a curriculum and develops a research plan to evaluate the results.
The project "Great Books Seminars at Education Secondary" aims for the following results:
Design a Great Books curriculum integrated into the official curricula.. Based on the experience of the teachers of each center, and the development of pilot programs, a curriculum will be designed to include all secondary school grades and high school diploma.
Create in each center educational the necessary context for the Seminars to achieve their objectives.. Specific training will be offered to the teachers of each high school. In addition, a community of study and reflection will be promoted among the teachers involved. In Education, you cannot give what you do not have. Therefore, teachers are the first ones who need to practice reading and commenting on Great Books with their colleagues.
Cultivate intellectual skills or habits in students.. Following the model educational of intellectual virtues, contribute to the maturation of the students. The reading of books, the dialogue in the classroom and the essay of argumentative texts will especially facilitate the growth in intellectual virtues.
Develop a plan for research. The goal is to be used both to guide the development of the educational intervention and to validate and disseminate the results to the educational community (managers, teachers and parents) and the international academic community .
