The sophistication of 15th century art
Around 1400, European courts produced some of the most brilliant manifestations of medieval art. During the 15th century, various artists in Europe displayed a pronounced taste for formal elegance and the extravagant fashions of the time.
With an aesthetic proposal that combined naturalism and fantasy in an extraordinary alliance, the so-called International Gothic was able to translate the imaginary of the late medieval aristocracy through sophisticated works and images that still surprise us today.

This call is directed by Joan Molina, Head of department of Spanish Gothic Painting at the Museo del Prado. An expert in the meanings and functions of medieval architecture and visual arts, he worked at teaching at the University of Girona for more than three decades before joining the Museum. The program he has designed features leading specialists to discuss this fascinating period.
Joan Molina
Head of department of Spanish Gothic Painting, Museo del Prado
D. in Art History from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Senior Associate Professor of Medieval Art at the University of Girona since 1997. He is visiting professor at the universities of Viterbo and Naples, at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence and the EHESS in Paris. In 2020 he joined the Museo del Prado as Head of department of Spanish Gothic Painting. Author of numerous publications and curator of exhibitions. He is manager of the new arrangement of the Museo del Prado's Gothic painting collection.
Josefina Planas
Professor of History of Art, University of Lérida
D. in Art History from the University of Barcelona. Throughout her degree program she has enjoyed scholarships of research in institutions such as the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York or the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. Since 2002 she is Professor of Medieval Art History at the University of Lérida. She is the author of numerous articles for research on manuscripts and miniatures.
Fernando Gutiérrez Baños
Full Professor of History of Art, University of Valladolid
Specialist in Medieval Art History with special attention to the art and painting of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, as well as aspects related to patronage and promotion of the arts. Throughout her degree program she is Frances A. Yates short-term research fellow at the Warburg Institute of the University of London and visiting fellow at the University of Princeton, being at present Full Professor of History of Art at the University of Valladolid.
Javier Baron
Head of Conservation of 19th Century Painting, Museo del Prado, Madrid
D. in Art History, he has worked at the Museo del Prado since 2003, where he is head of Conservation of 19th Century Painting. He is the author of numerous publications and curator of exhibitions on nineteenth-century painting. He is a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic and a member of issue of the Royal Institute of programs of study Asturianos and a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of History and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
