Spacewoman is a feature-length documentary that tells the extraordinary story of pioneering astronaut Eileen Collins, the first woman to pilot and command a NASA space shuttle. From a humble childhood in Elmira, New York, the film follows her path of perseverance and dedication, which led her to break through in two of the most demanding and traditionally male-dominated institutions: the United States Air Force and NASA.
Through intimate interviews and extraordinary file footage, the documentary traces Collins' four space missions, including historic milestones such as docking with a Russian space station, and reveals the rigor, discipline responsibility involved in leading high-risk missions. Beyond her professional achievements, Spacewoman offers a deeply human look at the impact of this degree program her staff family life. The film gives voice to those closest to her, especially her daughter Bridget, showing how the family lived with fear, uncertainty, and tragedies such as the Columbia disaster.
Directed by Hannah Berryman and featuring a moving score by Marcelo Zarvos, Spacewoman reflects on sacrifice, courage, and acceptable risk in human exploration, while championing the vital role of women in the future of space.
