It examines the ambivalent way in which religion relates to freedom and political community. While religion has the potential to secure human freedom and protect it against the threats of totalitarian political pretensions, it can also infringe on freedom staff and have totalitarian pretensions. The history of humanity has had experience of both valences, both in the institutional and cultural spheres.
