Gene Editing: Potential and Ethical Considerations
seminar from group Science, Reason and Faith.
Ujué Moreno. Pamplona, November 21, 2024.
Ujué Moreno has a degree in Biochemistry and a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Navarra. After a postdoctoral stay at the BHF-Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, she joined the Cardiovascular Diseases Program at CIMA, where she participated in programs of study on the molecular and cellular instructions of heart failure. She is currently a full professor at department of Biochemistry and Genetics of the School of Sciences. She is the author of more than 40 indexed articles, with an h-index of 25. She is PI and collaborator in national and European research projects. In her work she has always questioned the ethical implications of the use of these techniques and has tried to promote an interdisciplinary dialogue about them. She is a member of the CRYF.
summary
In the last decade, technological advances have made it possible for us to change the sequence of genomes. In this session I review the molecular underpinnings of gene editing and the technological development in recent years, leading up to the possibilities offered by these techniques at present and in the near future. Numerous philosophical and ethical questions arise in this field as a consequence of the paradigm shift that gene editing has brought about. I will present some ethical aspects of gene editing, especially in humans.
