Los Bañales is a Roman archaeological site located in the municipality of Uncastillo, just 100 kilometres from Pamplona. It is currently the most important Roman site in the Cinco Villas region of Aragon - a region with a strong Roman presence and an enviable historical and artistic heritage - and one of the most notable in Aragon.

Los Bañales hides the remains of a city that must have occupied an area of just over twenty hectares of land. Of this ancient city, whose name is still hidden, the remains of what was its public place (forum), some monumental baths, a complete artisan and residential quarter, several dwellings and a spectacular hydraulic water supply system with a dam and aqueduct have been preserved, making Los Bañales one of the most monumental Roman enclaves in northern Spain. It developed its historical life between the 1st century BC and the 8th century AD. In recent years, excavation campaigns have uncovered statues, inscriptions and everyday objects from the city's phase of splendour, around the 1st century AD".

The 9-hour daily theoretical and practical program includes work field excavation -supervised by archaeological technicians and living with university students from all over Europe- and work sessions directed by Javier Andreu, Senior Associate Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology of the School of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra and Director Scientific Plan of research of the Uncastillo Foundation in Los Bañales.

The classes:

  1. Approach to the management of the archaeological material at laboratory/cabinet (tasks of cleaning, inventorying, coding, classification and drawing of Materials) and to the documentation of archaeological contexts in the field.

  2. Aspects related to the material culture of the Roman world (pottery, bone, coins...) and its value as a historical source

  3. Current issues on subject of Classical Archaeology or directly related to the progress of the excavation (Roman sculpture, forums, painting, etc.).

During the campaign, each student will have a supporttutor , archaeologist or historian, to accompany and evaluate their learning.

At the end of the activity, the student will obtain a certificate of the activity accrediting the achievement of 4 ECTS credit for the two weeks of work.

Although the activity is preferably aimed at history students, it can accept students from other fields who are interested in living an unforgettable adventure in search of the remains of the Roman presence in our land 2000 years ago.

Students may choose to participate in the activity for one week only (July 7-14 or July 14-21) or participate in the full 2-week program.

It is recommended to arrive the day before the start of the programme.

The price per week of work is 390€. The student pays only the costs of food, travel and insurance.
