Mikel Alonsoformer student of the Degree in design at the School of Architecture, has received the accredited specialization of Honor at the International Design Awards 2024 for his project 'Olinda', a work that goal to incorporate intelligent technologies in the furniture in a non-invasive way.

With the aim of recognizing, celebrating and discovering emerging talent in architecture, interior, product, graphic and fashion design , the International Design Awards aim to draw attention to the iconoclasm of design worldwide, conceptualizing and producing great works.

Mikel tells us what receiving this award has meant to him.

1. What has receiving this award meant to you?

For me, receiving this accredited specialization of Honor has been a great satisfaction. This recognition reaffirms that I am on the right track and that all the effort I have put into my degree program is starting to pay off, which motivates me to continue developing new ideas in design.

2. What would you highlight about your project 'Olinda'? Where did the idea come from?

This project was born with the intention of finding the point where technology and design converge in a harmonious way, without interrupting our cognitive experience with the objects around us, and facilitate, through technology, a better interaction with everyday tasks. It is a project in which simplicity speaks for itself, and that is what makes it so attractive for the Username experience.

3. In summary, what has been your professional trajectory since you finished the programs of study the Degree in design at the School?

Since I finished my programs of study, I had the opportunity to work in all the fields of design that the school taught medesign graphic design, service design, product design, etc.) trying to find my place. Afterwards, I went to Italy to specialize in product and furniture design , where I was able to experiment with technology applied to design, which is what I do now.

4. What has the Degree in design given you that you consider to be a core topic in your professional development ?

The Degree gave me a very broad base in everything that encompasses design: creativity, problem solving.... Concepts that have been essential to adapt to the world of design, which is constantly evolving. But the most important thing, and what gives identity to everyone, is the ability to discover and develop your own style.

5. What committee would you give to a design student who is about to enter the job market?

As I mentioned before, everyone should follow their own style, have a core topic and, most importantly, not be afraid to experiment and make mistakes. Look for independent projects, apply for contests and never stop reinventing yourself and learning, since modern design is constantly evolving and it is something you never stop learning from.
