At the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura there are currently 45 doctoral students, of which 24 are enrolled in the doctoral program in Architecture, and 21 in the doctoral program in Applied Creativity. Nicol López Rodríguez, first year doctoral student, shares with us the details of her thesis on the experimental characterization and numerical modeling of joints in wooden Structures . Her research is directed by José Manuel Cabrero, Full Professor and director of the department of Construction, Installations and Structures (CIE) at the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra.
1. What does your thesis consist of?
My thesis focuses on the experimental characterization and numerical modeling of joints in wood Structures .
2. Why would you recommend doing a doctorate?
Because it allows you to deepen your knowledge in an area of interest, develop advanced research skills applicable to different fields, improve communication skills and acquire a broader perspective on the challenges related to the topic of study.
3. Why did you choose the academic degree program ?
I want to continue my professional life in the field of wood construction and, for this, I need to strengthen and expand my knowledge, especially in the topic joints. In addition, my previous experience in a research center allowed me to discover my interest in research and creation.
4. What have you learned during your doctorate that could serve as a committee for doctoral students who are just starting out?
My committee is to maintain discipline and order. Although the director provides support and guide at every step, much of the work is self-managed and progress depends, to a large extent, on oneself. It is also important to develop resilience, as difficulties will arise along the way, but you have to learn from them and move forward.
