From April 22 to 24, the postgraduate program Headquarters hosted the first meeting researchers and experts fromthe IEA EBC-Annex 97 – “Sustainable Cooling in Cities,” which was attended by researchers from the School of Architecture group , and the BIOMA Institute.
The researchers collaborated on the project CLIMAREADY+TPV project , “Toward a Decarbonized and Climate-Resilient Architecture: assessment Potential of TPV Glass for Educational and Residential Areas,” and the project Sudoe Col3Natur project , “Re-naturalization of School Buildings, Playgrounds, and Pathways for Climate Change Adaptation.”
In response to the intensification of extreme heat and the urban heat island effect, and within the framework the International Energy Agency (IEA), the project integrate technological innovation, climate-adapted design , and forward-looking policies to develop resilient cooling solutions at both the building and city levels. Effective cooling strategies are essential for protecting public health, improving energy efficiency, and strengthening urban resilience.
Impact in real-world settings
Annex 97 examines the interaction between outdoor heat mitigation and building-level cooling, providing cities with a deeper understanding of which measures work, under what conditions, and how to combine them most effectively. Acore topic project to translate this knowledge practical guidelines for municipalities, planners, and policymakers. Through research , real-world testing, and partnership , Annex 97 supports cities in implementing sustainable cooling solutions that improve comfort, reduce emissions, and optimize overall quality of life. The project run until 2030.

Strategy and Solutions laboratory
On April 22, a seminar on urban policies and strategies in Spain took place, organized by Theofanis Psomas (Chalmers University) and Aurora Monge (ETSA UNAV), with the participation of Miguel Segovia Martínez (GBCe), María José Alonso Moya (Madrid City Council), Albert Gassull ( Barcelonaarea ), Rafael Villar Burke (IETcc-CSIC, Torroja), and Miguel Ángel Díaz Camacho (professor at the School).
On April 24, the Alumni Building postgraduate program University of postgraduate program hosted the second day of the meeting , which was attended by 40 researchers in person and an equal number online.
Participating institutions included the University of South Wales and RMIT in Australia; LBNL in the U.S.; University College Cork; the University of Perugia, the University of Turin, and the University of Milan; Oxford University and Brunel University London; the University of Southern Denmark and Aalborg University; the University of La Rochelle; Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e); ULiège and KU Leuven; PUCPR (Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná); Université de Sherbrooke and the committee research committee research Canada (NRC); as well as Spanish universities such as UPM, UPC, and UPV, in addition to UNAV.
