Redesigning everyday objects

Have you ever thought about the ideation process behind a corkscrew, a pair of scissors or a hammer? The students of 2nd of design have had to do it for the subject of Taller de design III.

The students of the 2nd year of design have carried out an exercise in the subject of Workshop of design III in which they had to deconstruct different utensils, detailing each of the pieces and functions, and then recreate them with a touch of innovation.

Each has chosen one of the everyday objects from the list provided by the teachers: cutter with locking wheel, adjustable pliers, clamp, scissors with ergonomic plastic handle, metal saw or mini metal saw, wrench, butterfly corkscrew and nail hammer.

As stated in the statement of project, this ''aims to dwell on the possibilities of everyday objects, those that are daily within our reach and that, in an unconscious way, we use them without paying the slightest attention to their design''. With this idea, the teachers of design have led the students of the 2nd year of design to analyze more in depth objects of our daily life and to which we do not usually pay too much attention.

This exercise is also intended to improve attention to detail, as explained in the statement: "As Charles Eames said: "the details are not the details, the details are the design "". Therefore, students have had to look with 'designer's eyes' at the meetings between different pieces and their union and/or articulation.

In addition, each student had the challenge to capture the use value of that object, that is, to "represent and visually communicate the identity of the object" in a creative way.

Finally, they had to design new versions of the corresponding object by adding new functions or improvements for everyday use.
